Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Taping a bullmastiffs ears

At what age do I need to start worrying about my bullmastiff puppy's ears - how long should I leave it before taping rosed ears?

taping/glueing ears is cheating in my book.say the dog gets to winning and is used at stud and produces a load of drop eared pups, many of those bitch owners would not have usedd the male if they knew he had ear carriage problems naturally,i bet it happens a lot but i bet when bitch owners come to use the dog all these stud dog owners stay tight lipped about it..we should strive to breed dogs with correct ear carriage etc etc not give nature a helping hand.

While i do agree with coopers comments it hasn't really answered your question.  I'm certainly not an expert but if it helps i've just done my bitches ears this week and she is 16 weeks old.  If you are unsure as to whether they need doing or not ask your breeder and they should be able to advise you better.  Mine was a great help and i found the easiest way for me to do them was with Copydex glue rather than tape.  Surprisingly puppy wasn't at all bothered.

I'm sure that others with more experiance will add their thoughts soon.

Good Luck

If putting Copydex on dogs ears is cheating, then I would pretty well guarantee that most Kerry Blue exhibitors can be put in this catagory (or at least they could in the days when I bred Kerries!).    No, the dogs didn't seem to mind it, but you had to make sure the ears were scrupulously clean inside when you did it.     It was usually done about 4 months old, to carry them over the time when they were changing their teeth, as this definitely affects ear carriage.

The copydex was simply trimmed off as the coat grew longer.

My worry would be that in a short-coated  breed you the Copydex would be too close to the skin, and you would get a skin rash, and it would be difficult to remove - this didn't apply to Kerries, who had long puppy coats that the air could get through.

Sorry to sound dumb but what are rose ears??
- By sandaharr [gb] Date 23.07.04 09:18 UTC
I typed in rose ears for a search and there they were,I knew what they looked like but didn't know that is what they were called. When Raz(boerboel) was younger we thought she was going to have rose ears and I was advised to tape them or glue them but I didn't as she is not for showing and when she came through the teething stage her ears turned out perfect, but I think if she had been for showing I would have followed advice and got the same results,so it has made me think twice about this now, sandra.

no problem with anyone doing it if they want a dog for show then obviously they want to give it a helping hand.i do think it is a little underhand because as a breeder i would want to see all stock shown on a level playing field,in an ideal world and all that.where i do have a major problem is people not telling you that they had to glue the ears of the sire or dam you are buying a puppy from or stud dog/brood bitch you are using, this dog/bitch may be what you want to go into your breeding program and you will be introducing bad ear carriage.i speak as someone that has known my bitches family for over 20 years, recently i mated to a champion stud dog and had a litter with terrible ear carriage, i am disapointed and obviously the pups new owners will be disappointed and possibly blame me for the fault but as i said i knew the females family and there was no problems on that side with ear carriagew problems.i have no idea if the stud dog or his family did and never will i suppose as with so many glueing the ears its impossible to tell but obviously i am sceptical and will not use the dog or his close relations again (which i was intending doing) which is bad news as he was the dog i thought was the answer to most of which i wanted....oh well back to the drawing board.
