I have heard that you can rub oil into your dogs pads!  Is this something you should or not do?  Also if so what sort of oil?

Hi Debbie, this is not something I have ever considered before. I don't see any need. Also I would think it would not be good for your carpets and clothing. Perhaps someone else can think of a reason to rub oil into the pads.

Well exercised dogs have smooth, quite soft pads because they are worn on rough surfaces. Poorly exercised dogs will have rough hard pads, not to mention long nails. It is of course advisable to check your dogs feet after exercise, for cuts and other damage. I had one that got a pine needle embedded in one of his pads, I didn't notice it for a few days and it wouldn't come out once I found it. He needed an operation to remove it, a fragment had migrated up his pastern.

But oil?  Nahh.

I am sure I read it somewhere, not that he needs it.  I have read so much to do with dogs and cant remember where.  I was asking because I was wondering why the would need it.  I always check Masons pads.  That must have been painful a pine needle.

I rub canola or vegetable oil all over my dogs after a bath every time...

Edit: I also read some place to rub a little on their nose if their nose is starting to crack or get that sand paper look.

I find putting oil on the feet is excellent for footprinting the criminals.............:D

I would think it qould clog up the pores that dogs have in their feet, they do sweat from them. I have used paw wax on their feet when doing a dance routine on a slippery floor. :) If you have cracked pads then a bit of margarine in their dinner will help, once or twice a week.

No his pads are not cracked, it is just I have read so much about puppies and dogs recently and I am sure I read it somewhere, and just wondered of what use it would be.

Some sort of paw wax is used by many people (especially those with long hair breeds) in my area in the winter as our streets/sidewalks are salted after snow removal. The salt is then picked up by dogs out on a walk, often clinging to the hairs, and it can burn or irritate their pads. Just be sure to wipe it off when the dogs get home as the wax makes walking on wood floors very slippy. I personally have never used the stuff, preferring instead to wash doggy paws with soap+water--yes I have a lot of time on my hands ;)

Hi,

I use paw wax for ringcraft training as we have a slippy floor also in sporthalls when showing and there are no mats available excellent from preventing slidding.
Great on icy roads  when I apply  it to all my Goldens on salty/icy roads, never had a problem, pads seem to be in super condition :-)

Briony:-)
