Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / should I tell boarding kennels
- By Guest [gb] Date 11.06.04 11:50 UTC
Asking for advice again.  My dog has got kennel cough after being in kennels recently.  Should I advise the boarding kennels she was in?  Don't want to complain but just to let them know.  Obviously I know kennel cough is a risk you take putting your dog in kennels.  I now know there is a vacine you can give your dogs 2/3 weeks before they go in, although it doesn't cover every strain of cough.

Most boarding kennels won't accept dogs without them having the kennel cough vaccination.
I definitnely think that you should tell the kennels, I wouldn't be happy about putting my dogs somewhere that I knew could be infected with kennel cough

Yes inform the kennels, no, most probably don't insist on Intrac vaccine because it only protects against "Bordatella" one type of kennel cough.

Rachel.
It is worth knowing kennel cough can be incubated for up to around 11 days BEFORE a dog coughs, however it remains infectious before and after that period.  So, its quite possible that the kennels do not have coughing dogs there and may not be aware of it. If a dog only went in for a few days or so, she/he could of picked up the virus prior to boarding and has in fact infected the whole kennel!!  Not saying it was in this case but it is very possible.  If the dog was covered on insurance whilst boarding, check the dog is not covered for a short time after leaving, the kennels may be able to pay any vet bills.

That's interesting Dawn.  All the kennels we've ever looked at have insisted on them being vaccinated, as is the rule with our dogs at work.  This is why I thought kennel cough spread like wild fire!  I was told there were literally hundreds of strains of kennel cough and the vaccination only prevented about 40 or 50% of these.

Yeah Rachel many will insist, but like you said the vaccine doesn't cover all strains, but I suppose its everything you can do.  Where as ALL insurance companies insist the dogs they are covering (commercial premises) are vaccinated againg Parvo, Lepto etc... they don't insist that the Intrac vaccine is given and will quite happily pay for dogs needing treatment for it.
