Hi, first to take one of the earlier points "American Cockers are more reserved" WRONG!!!! of the 2 breeds, Am cockers are much, much more exuberant and outgoing than the English! Of course, individual animals have different charters, but taking the breeds as a whole the Yankee is a proper little show off - "Above all, they should be Merry" is a viatl part of the standards. They are busy, nosey, happy and very self centred! This is one of the reasons they make such show-stopping show dogs!
Now to go inot the techncial differences, the Am. has a shorter for-face with very prounounced stop, padded muzzle bigger, rounder eyes, low set ears with very heavy feathering. The Eng. has a longer, elegant nose and foreface. A longer neck flowing seamlessy into a slightly shorter back., with a slightly sloping topline for the Am. as opposed to the Eng. level topline. The coat is heavier on the Am Cocker, but should never appear fluffy! ;) The Ams are a compact, cobby little dog, and should have true sporting appearance , moving with much more drive and verve than the Eng. The Am cockers also have surprisingly big feet (a point not noted in the breed standard!)
We do have several health issues to consider. Firstly the eye problems, most notably being Hereditary Cataract, followed by Glaucoma and PRA, however, the incidence of these last 2 is small, but does occur so must be watched for. Then the problems we do not test for in the UK. In the USA Am Cockers are tested for Hip Dysplasia (not a lot of evidence of it in the UK, but you do see one or two which you think ????about!) and slipping patellas - quite evident over here, I am afraid (but then it is in a whole lot of breeds). We also have an incidence of epilepsy, and a recently occurring Auto-immune problem. Good, knowledgable breeders monitor for this, and network world wide to keep these problems at bay.
I currently own a whole bunch of Am cockers, but in the past have owned Eng cockers too.
bye
Gwen
