Topic Dog Boards / General / american cocker spanial vs cocker
- By ginastarr [ie] Date 20.05.04 12:30 UTC
hi can anyone tel me what is the difference between the two breeds
just interested

thank you
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 20.05.04 12:36 UTC
They have totally different heads and coats, that is speaking as an onlooker. Don't think they look or behave the same at all, the cocker has the soft expression and smooth coat and the Am. a flattened face and a fluffy looking coat, the cocker a happy outgoing appearance the Am. is more reserved. And before you all shout at me this is the opinion of an outsider of how the breeds appear to an outsider.

The best thing is to compare the Breed Standards here (American) and here (Cocker). To an outsider they certainly appear to be very different.

thank you i think the american cocker has a lovely cute face and lovely coat
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 20.05.04 13:19 UTC
Personally I prefer 'our' cocker's head and coat. But thank God we don't all like the same things!

English cockers for me............well I would say that I'm biased, just having the 5 that is.  ;-)
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 20.05.04 16:30 UTC
Have to agree, neither are my breed but I do prefer the head and more balanced appearance of the English, finding the skull shape and shorter back of the American less appealing, as JG said, it's a good job we don't all have the same tase. Hate an overdone coat on either, something we see a fair bit of lately, may look ok in the show ring but if the owner can't deal with it or only have the dog groomed occasional it just looks a mess and spoils the conformation.

I prefer the American cockers they have the most wonderful happy and merry temperament with they melting expression and there alert looking eyes and when they have the full show coat they look wonderful but it is hard work but if I wasn't looking after them I don't no what I would do
They also look ever grate in puppy trim as I call it were there legs are sissored in one of mine really suits it she is a madam though they always brighten me up when I am feeling down :) but that is my opinion and we all like different breeds
bye bye for now Fiona

Hi, first to take one of the earlier points "American Cockers are more reserved"  WRONG!!!! of the 2 breeds, Am cockers are much, much more exuberant and outgoing than the English!  Of course, individual animals have different charters, but taking the breeds as a whole the Yankee is a proper little show off - "Above all, they should be Merry" is a viatl part of the standards.  They are busy, nosey, happy and very self centred!  This is one of the reasons they make such show-stopping show dogs!

Now to go inot the techncial differences, the Am. has a shorter for-face with very prounounced stop, padded muzzle bigger, rounder eyes, low set ears with very heavy feathering.   The Eng. has a longer, elegant nose and foreface. A longer neck flowing seamlessy into a slightly shorter back., with a slightly sloping topline for the Am. as opposed to the Eng. level topline.  The coat is heavier on the Am Cocker, but should never appear fluffy! ;)  The Ams are a compact, cobby little dog, and should have true sporting appearance , moving with much more drive and verve than the Eng.  The Am cockers also have surprisingly big feet (a point not noted in the breed standard!)

We do have several health issues to consider.  Firstly the eye problems, most notably being Hereditary Cataract, followed by Glaucoma and PRA, however, the incidence of these last 2 is small, but does occur so must be watched for.  Then the problems we do not test for in the UK.  In the USA Am Cockers are tested for Hip Dysplasia (not a lot of evidence of it in the UK, but you do see one or two which you think ????about!) and slipping patellas - quite evident over here, I am afraid (but then it is  in a whole lot of breeds).  We also have an incidence of epilepsy, and a recently occurring Auto-immune problem.  Good, knowledgable breeders monitor for this, and network world wide to keep these problems at bay.

I currently own a whole bunch of Am cockers, but in the past have owned Eng cockers too.
bye
Gwen

if i was getting a am cocker puppy what would you recommend i look out for gwen? well not for another year or two
will be getting prt in a few months but this could possibly change to am cocker as i have fallen for them and my dad is now trying to change my mind as he spent two weeks in america with a american cocker called molly and he used to have an english cocker when he was younger but rather the am cocker mollys litter mate is owned by serena williams ...

of course i will research the breed like i have the prt before i fully deciede

I'm firmly in the American Camp, 6 of the little darlings share my house.

PS ginastarr, you can go no better than to keep in touch with Gwen, and absorb her expertise, if it's knowledge of the breed you're after.

- By petejsy [je] Date 22.05.04 07:01 UTC
Hi

Yankee's are the best !!
- By Lea Date 22.05.04 09:03 UTC
I used to look after English cockers, and now own and American cocker.
When looking into getting Beano, I asked my mate what the difference was between them. Her analasis of them after owning and showing both is............
English are more reserved, they come up and give you a hand shake, and quietly say hello, just like the brits!!!!!!!!!!
Americans are more full on, they come up and give you a big hug and shout HIYA, just like the Americans!!!!!!!!! (no disrespect meant to either culture)
Oh and the Americans have ALOT more coat(just about to see how much as my living room floor is going to be covered in it!!!!!!! Beano is just about to have his clipping and scissoring session!!!!!!!!!!!!!)HTH
Lea :)
