Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Puppy to Adult food at what age?
- By porkie [gb] Date 20.04.04 21:40 UTC
We have fed Spice on Nature Puppy Diet and a mix of JWB complete which she adores, for the past 3months having given up on Ped.Chum!

However I contacted Nature Diet to enquire about the right age to progress to the Adult version and was surprised that they said she would now be ready for the Adult Menu.

Quote:
"At 6 months of age, you may start feeding the standard adult menus to her now, she should by now have passed through her fastest period of growth and although she may continue to mature for another 8-9 months, this growth will be much slower and more gradual. The puppy menu has elevated protein levels that if fed to a dog who has no requirement for the excess, can lead to fast growth which can be detrimental to larger breeds, and hyperactivity is also seen sometimes especially in breeds like the Border Collie just because it is too much energy."

Can I please have your opinions on this,as I thought puppies in general went onto an Adult menu at around 1year?

Spice doesn't appear hyperactive, she has a lot of energy but then most border collies usually do and she only eats one packet of puppy diet and some JWB once a day  if we give her any more she just sniffs it and walks off, for snacks she has hide chews or raw veg such as carrot. She is gaining around 1kg every 10days now and currently weighs 15.2kgs,her coat is thick and shiny and she seems in the peak of condition.

Any advice is welcome,
Jacqueline.

I always change at around 6 months. I like to get off puppy food as soon as possible.

Best wishes, John

Normally change around 4 months but my present pup has been on adult since I have had him and there is no difference in his physical development but he has been a bit less hyper than normal, this may be the lower protein or just the nature of the beast. Would do it again though as it has been very successful and I have had no sign of Pano or hyper behaviour but would need to try it on about 3 pups before I would say it really makes any difference, but when you think about it animals in the wild do not get different food once they are weaned.

I had Millie on Pedigree Puppy previously which suggested changing to adult food at 9-12 months, then I changed her to JWB and the helpline operator confirmed what their website said that I should change her to adult at 6 months.  I was dubious at first but went along with it and am glad to see that the experienced people above would go along with that.  Phew!

(I have to say she is much calmer now and sleeps a lot more - which sounds wicked of me, but when you've had 4 months of puppy madness, its a welcome break! :-D)

Helen I feed the collie puppy on JWB junior & my adult westie on Wafcol. The westie loves the JWB so  I am going to change her when the Wafcol is finished. JWB comes in turkey, Lamb and I think the other is duck  :-)

We have used all flavours of JWB so far so good,Spice eats it all! but she was leaving Eukanuba when we first tried her on that, which is why we swapped to JWB and Naturediet mixed, instead of Ped.Chum puppy and Eukanuba.
I think all dogs will decide what they do or do not like,a bit like children do,so maybe start off with a smaller size bag! My son benefited from the HUGE bag of Eukanuba we bought for his dog and luckily she liked it :D

I chose Turkey for my Scottie.  She thoroughly enjoyed a bit of turkey at Christmas - and when she had the pedigree pouches, she would scoff the turkey and rice and umm and ahh a bit with the lamb and rice so I decided to go with the Turkey.  Plus (real) turkey and chicken (white meat) are supposed to be easier on digestion - no idea if this applies to dry food too, but it seemed another good reason to go for turkey, lol (even if it is just turkey flavouring ;-) )

Millie loves it, I had trouble getting her to eat her pedigree after a while, would turn her nose up at it at breakfast and leave it all day until 6pm, now she loves her JWB and tonight has just sat barking at the bag asking for more!
