I bought a golden retriever puppy aged 4 and a half months from a reputable breeder which was overshot , she said she couldn,t use her for show but still charged me £475 even though my mother had bought her for me because my husband had gone blind. Since we have got her home we have had endless problems with her . Namely submissive weeing which I cant control which has ruined all my carpets . I have e- mailed her and all she suggests is contacting some behaviourist which we cant afford. She knew this dog was weeing all the time she was mopping it up when we were there. How come she can get away with this Ithought reputable breeders were supposed to asssess their buyers. How can I cope with a blind husband and a dog which is far too complicated for our situation?

Firstly I would feel that the price you paid was a little excessive as the puppy has an incorrect mouth ,but having said that she can live a normal life. How long have you had this puppy?how old is she? mopping up after puppies is pretty normal but if you say she is frightened then we need to discover why she is frightened.
Are you unable to cope as you have so much on your plate and maybe transferring your anxiety to the puppy.
Please dont think I'm getting at you I am not just that in order to help you it would be good to know a bit more about the situation.

Hi guest. :) I feel for you. I'm not sure what your mothers reasoning behind getting this puppy was. Was it to be a companion for you or your husband? As he is going blind, was she hoping it would bring something positive into your situation? Taking on a puppy at the best of times takes an incredible commitment of time, effort and patience. Love is not enough.

Your breeder should be providing you with support. It sounds like she is passing the buck unfortunately. The members of this board are incredibly helpful and will give you some of the best advice around. If you really think you can't cope, then perhaps you should think about rehoming him. I would first speak with the breeder, then perhaps a rescue society. You are not a bad person for doing this. This may not be an option you want to consider, of course. I don't know all your circumstances, but you sound like your close to the end of your rope.

I hope you find the answers to your questions here and get the help you need.

All the best,
Quinn

Submissive urinating is quite common in Gundog pups in my experience, usually those that are just too anxious to please. without meaning to be rude with so much going on in your life this may be compounding the pups problem, as it will feed on the anxiety in the household and not know how to do 'right'. a puppy takes a lot of time and commitment and training! They are pretty full time work (any breed) until at least two years of age, by which time if you have been diligent with their training an upbringing they will start to become the kind of companion I imagine you were hoping for.

There really isn't a short cut, people simply do not often offer to sell a well trained adult, some rescues that have lost their homes due to death of their owner maybe, but a lot are given up because the owner has not realised the amount of training and time needed, and they are still in need of the same work as a pup!

The breeder if responsible should be willing (no eager now that your situation is so difficult) to have the puppy back to put into a very calm home with laid back people with lots of time and patience!
