Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / One or Two?

I am planning on welcomimg a yorkshire terrier into my home in the new year, but as I do work for some time during the day, a friend reccommended I take two puppies to keep eachother company. After reading all the literature I can get my hands on regarding the breed I have seen in written more than once that it is not a good idea to get two puppies at the same time, and especially not from the same litter. The reasoning behind this seems to be that they will love and respect eachother more than their owner.

Has anyone any experience or views on this?
I am a little confused as one often sees owners with two or more yorkies on walks.
Any feedback will be greatfully recieved!

Hi,
There are several threads on the topic of "One pup or two" where there has been a lot of discussion.

Very many breeders won't sell two pups together for that very reason - it is much more hard work training two pups at the same time. If you are used to multiple dogs it's not so bad, but I personally wouldn't do it again. When training any pup you need to watch it constantly and concentrate fully on it. Multiply that by two (because training needs to be done one at a time) and there is very little time left in the day for anything else!

By far the best idea is to get one pup first, train it how you want it, then get another pup a year or so later as company for it.

I agree totally. I would never sell 2 puppies from the same litter & don't think many responsible breeders would. The puppies would be too busy listening to each other & not to you. Far better to get one & wait until it's pretty well trained, but still young enough to happily accept a companion. They are not twice the work - about 4 times the work I would say!!!

There is also the Issue with dominance. If they are the same age they are more likely to have to vye for postiion, whereas a puppy will almost alwatys accept the older dog in the household as above it in the grand scheme of things, and there are less likely to be fights. Yorkies may be a Toy breed, but their Terrier natures are very much to the fore.
