my bitch bled deeply upto day 8,it suddenly changed watery and we had her mated as she was tail moving and standing upto the stud.Today which is day 9 it is bloody again and she is still standing upto my neutured male and i am repeat mating tomorrow on day 10.Has anyone else had this and does anyone think she may not ovulate?? I have paid four figures for the stud so i am a bit scared???

Paying the amount you are I would have her tested for ovulation by the vet as well, then you will know if you are mating on the correct days

Is it not possible to leave the bitch with the stud owner? I have always allowed the bitch to stay from day 10 of her season & for the dogs to mate once or twice a day when the bitch is ready so usually the bitch gets 4 matings whilst staying with me. Seems to be alot of money to pay for a stud as well, so i would be wanting some sort of service for my money i'm afraid, i couldn't justify giving the stud owner £1,000 for 30mins work.
Just my opinion
Angie.

Agree £1000 is way over the top but whatever the stud fee it is never for just 30 minutes work, surely the fee is for tapping into years of work creating the stud dogs line :)
- By angienelly [gb] Date 10.08.03 14:44 UTC
Yes that is what the stud fee is for but at the end of the day how long will it take for the dog to mate the bitch 2hrs max if she is ready but difficult? & surely no dog is worth a £1,000 stud fee? is it?
The only reason i can think he has asked such a high price is because (now don't bite my head off) the bitch may not be what he thinks good enough for his male so he has asked a silly price to put you off, but obviously it hasn't.
Or he is just greedy i dare to think what a puppy from the dog would cost?
Bye
Angie.

hi angie, the stud has broken all records in his breed in the u.k and he charges the same to all visiting bitches. My bitch also is a superb example of her breed as i would not breed if otherwise. Her puppies will not be cheap but we have already secured some excellent homes already.QUALITY COMES AT A PRICE SOMETIMES. THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS ALL

I would have her mated every 48 hours til she doesn't want to stand for him any more, If she will still stand for him happily, 3 matings will be ample, though 2 will probably be enough you might as well get your money's worth if they are both willing!! - and you dont want matings more than 5-6 days apart - though most bitches wouldn't stand for longer anyway. Good luck.

Hi Kane,

I would be concerned (whatever the stud fee) at 2 matings so early in the season without premate tests etc, especially as she has started showing colour again. The blood tests will let you know if she has/has not yet ovulated or is currently ovulating - prices vary between vets, but are well worth it. Check with the dog owner to see how many matings you are allowed.

We recently had a bitch who showed signs of being ready on day 9, and was mated days 9 & 11. Day 15 she started flagging her tail much more strongly and flirting desperatly with anything in sight,, dog or bitch :). Mated her again, and whilst she had been reasonably willing for the first 2 matings she was a whole lot more keen for this one.

Is this your first litter from this bitch? It can be easier for subsequent matings when you have an idea of the bitches season and fertility pattern.

bye
Gwen

Hi Kane,
Sorry for saying that and i am glad your bitch is a good example of her breed , but sometimes i have people turning up on my door step for matings & i am far too nice to say no way your bitch is rubbish & you shouldn't breed from it so i usually say a very silly price which always puts them off they obviously will still breed the bitch with another dog but i wouldn't want my dogs to go with the wrong bitches as it could give my male a bad reputation.
I would agree with Gwen as quite a few bitches will actually stand for mating on the 9th or 10th day as they are too eager to breed but they will usually ovulate between 12th & 14th day.
Maybe that your bitch is different in her cycles but a good stud dog would not mate a bitch until she smells right no matter how much she flirts!:) So hopefully fingers crossed for you she conceives.
Good luck
Angie.

We've just mated one of our bitches who is the ugliest Pom around, but I know the lines etc. and now we have a lovely 10 week old puppy who is everything a pom should be. Don't always look at the way the dog looks, look at the line and what the line has produced. Luckily we have the stud dog, but if all breeders thought along the line of looking at the bitch and thinking how awful she is there wouldn't be some of the champions around today.

Surely it's what's behind them that counts, isn't it? I know some very well known breeders who have their brood bitches who aren't exactly show quality but well and truly produce some wonderful pups and champions too.

I agree with you, never judge a book by its cover is the old saying and well it is very right!! you might have an ugly looking bitch but throws the most beautifull puppies, and vice versa.

Hi Angie (& Kane) perhaps the stud dog willing to mate/time thing differs between breeds? Most of our boys are so eager to get near any bitch in season that they will attempt to mate just a few days into the season. I took Englebert for a semen ollection last week, and the only bitch we had in season (to act as a tease) was little Puglet, who was only on day 6. Engelbert was more than willing to attempt to perform.

My male is an ex stud dog and we have had him for many years hes getting on in life and has been de sexed but if you get a bitch thats in heat he acts like hes ready to go again!! and in his time he was a bit like your male dog weither its day 1 or day 12 he would still stick his nose were it shouldnt be..... and he was a very succesfull stud dog and he never learnt in his 6 years..... must be a male thing!!!!
