Things did not work out well at all - i was postnatally depressed and just plain not coping. i called every single shelter in england that i could find a phone number for [i'm not kidding, i mean ALL of them], and every time was told there was no room - it was November, and apparently that's a busy time - all the ncdl centres had somewhere in the region of four to six month waiting lists to bring a dog in for rehoming!!!
i eventually found a kennels that would take him on [after MUCH searching], just twenty miles from us - talk about murpheys law!!!!
He was doing really well, and improving albeit slowly. Told the kennels all about him and they said they'd continue his training and socialisation. We'd had him four months, he'd been neutered, got his jabs done, and we sent him with all his stuff like bowls and leads - kennels thought he stood a good chance of finding a knowledgable home.
But it wasn't to be - one of the kennel staff worked with him for two months, and he was still improving every day. Until one of the work experience people the kennels had in went into his kennel [bear in mind there was a sign on it saying NOT to]. He didn't know her, didn't trust her, and she just barged in and bent over him. He bit her :( She said she wanted him put to sleep, and they did it because she made such a fuss.
i'm still kicking myself for being too weak to deal with him myself, because i KNOW he was curable. His trust in people was coming back, but it's a slow process. He was the most loyal obediant dog with the people he trusted, and i miss him so much!!! He deserved so much better after the things he went through.

There has been much critisism over the years of the RSPCA all of which is true. But no mention has ever been made of the NCDL. Only in the last few months have I discovered that I am not alone in my condemnation of yet another national animal charity making false claims. It is interesting to note that last November NCDL kennels were unable to take in dogs for up to six months yet they collect every week from Welsh kennels, so where are all these dogs. In a letter from head office they claim to collect 15,000 dogs per year yet rehome approx. 7,600. Where are the rest? Having checked their statistics for the past five years I am less than happy . A lot more could be said but I am trying to be a little circumspect here. If the animal charities had put into practise what they claim to do instead of constantly blaming the owners, the stray population would be reduced and there would far less animal suffering.

It wasn't last November, it was November 2000....
As far as i'm aware, the NCDL don't put a dog down unless it's unhealthy. I've known them to take dogs on with a behavioural problem [sometimes severe!] and be able to rehabilitate the dog and rehome it. i'm not saying they're angels, but i do think they do a better job than the RSPCA!!

Good for you!
That is whst I would have done! The rspca's answer to everything is PTS which is just rediculous! A hell of a lot of animals could make the most wonderful companions with a bit of effort...but "effort" isnt a word that comes easily to the RSPCA. They would rather send out some crappy raffle tickets every christmas ( most probably to make money for the euthatal to put the animals to sleep) than actually CARE about animals. Its a joke. In this country.,..if you want something done, you gotta do it yourself. How crazy is that! :(

My respect and support for the RSPCA finished many years ago. It seems that their only priority at the moment is too ban hunting with dogs, even though a recent report concluded that hunting with dogs is the LEAST cruel option in the control of Foxes.
It seems like statistics only matter when they support their own viewpoint and that cruelty has a lower priority than politics.

I've read all your comments with interest. Im amazed that most of you all feel so opposed to the RSPCA. Where i live, in Bham the Rspca seem to be doing their job. On around 4 occasions ive had dealings with them. (finding strays/injured animlas) They have been quick to respond.
Speak as you find.

It's nice to hear that somewhere they are doing their job. I'm glad you've had a good experience:)
