What is the difference between these 2 breeds?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 01.04.03 07:18 UTC
The "Boston Terrier" is an old breed which was developed in the USA from around 1800, ans is recognised by the Kennel Clubs of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and the FCI.

The "Olde Boston Bulldogge" is not mentioned in any dog encyclopaedia I can find, even those which mention breeds which are Not recgnised by any National Kennel Club.

Make of that what you will. :)

The boston terrier is much smaller and only comes in brindle/white, black/white, seal/white, most common bl/w most prefered br/w. They should not weigh any more then 25pounds and have full color desired, no white heads disqualified, nice even blaze, white front legs and white legs up to the hock in the back (desired markings) must be evenly marked through out. People tend to like the bl/w more because they are more flashy but the true color is brindle which I like.

Where the boston bulldog is bigger and suppose to be what the boston originally looked like before it became the breed we know today. The boston bulldog can weigh any where from 25 to 45 pounds and can come in all colors like the bulldog, they are pretty dogs but remind me more of a pitt. I have a pic of one of the original Boston Terrier had a white head and brindle body male whelped June24,1895 Breeder: T.B. Seary Owner:Fred H. Speed the bostons name was Ben Butler-AKC 47974 his parents were Buster and Stella.

Saw the website and i agree they do look more staffordshire than the boston terrier. Almost like a cross between the 2. I like the fact that they have a longer snout than the boston terrier.

They are nice looking dogs. U can get some boston terriers that are more slender and have a snout and a little longer tail, My junior is since he takes a lot more after the terrier then the bulldog.

ttfn :)

I noticed that the olde boston bulldogge ears sometimes drop unlike the boston terrier. That to me is a good quality. Does anyone know of any breeders?

The Olde Boston Bulldogge (or Olde Boston Bulldog or Old Boston Bulldog originally the Round Headed Bull Terrier or Boston Bull) was the original breed that was later bred down and became the Boston Terrier. Most people believe that the French Bulldog was crossed in along the way, explaining the Boston Terrier's bat like ears. I have a 5 month old Olde Boston Bulldog puppy now. The ears are kind of a shot in the dark for this breed, up or down. My dog has one ear that perks up pretty good and folds over to the front and the other folds backwards.

I saw on a related post that you are in the USA. I'm not sure where in the US you are, but the breeder for these dogs is in Ohio. His name is Nathaniel Rutan. His home phone number is 740-625-7364 and his email address is bostonbull@bright.net He has an add for puppies at http://www.dogresources.com/puppies.html

My dog is great, and I just love him. When we go anywhere, everyone wants to know what kind of dog he is, and that requires a bit of explanation. There a very rare breed, and most people have never heard of them. People usually think it's a Pit Bull whos tail was docked or a large Boston Terrier.

I'm very happy with my choice to get an Olde Bosto Bulldogge. He's a great dog. I hope this helps you.
