Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Titre Testing - cost

Hope somebody could enlighten me into the cost of titre testing, I have been quoted £168.57 by my vet!! Surely this is not a fair price?????

Thanks in advance

Sounds about right I am afraid. I know that with Rabies jabs and the testing each of my two girls cost about £250 to get their Pet Passports.

yes - titre tests are done by external labs, so the cost is higher than you'd expect. There may be a slight variation between vets in your area, but not much.

My vets have just quoted £140 for the rabies jab and testing for one of my girls to go on the Pets passport.

Guest, I wouldn't use your vet!!! :D :D

If you are talking about the titre tests for checking whether the dog needs his annual vaccination boosters, then get your vet to send the blood direct to Glasgow Uni, not his usual commercial lab. It will be much cheaper. Last year I was charged the following:

Blood sampling (for the 3 titre tests) £6.11
Lab fee (Glasgow) inc. carriage £36.66
Lepto vaccination booster + annual checkup £20.03

TOTAL £62.80 inclusive of VAT

Go to the Glasgow Lab website and download the Canine Sample Request Form and Canine Price List and give them to your vet. If you've done the donkey work for him, he can't really refuse to use this lab. This approach worked for me last year - my vet first quoted a price in excess of £100 also. Your bill may vary slightly because the sampling, lepto and checkup costs are determined by your vet.

Hope this helps!!

That's what I love about this site, brilliant info such as this being shared :)

That was very interesting, I may titre test this year and it will help to save the pennies; thanks Monty's Mum.

It's a pleasure, Lindsay! We often take it for granted that the vet knows best, but not always. That was the first time my vet had been asked about vaccination titres and didn't have a clue. He had to go away for a few days to do his research before he'd go ahead with my request! He didn't mind me knowing more than him, though, and said he'd had an interesting few days' reading! ;) :D
