Just seen - again - that STUPID detol ad 'contains graphic pictures of germs ... germs you can't see'
What the ***** are they on about .. apart from proving the have absolutely NO grasp of the English language

Sorry for the rant but my blood pressure goes up every time it's on.

I hate the one about buying a mo’er, what’s gone wrong with the letter T, it’s in danger of becoming extinct
- By Cava14Una Date 19.05.22 22:58 UTC Upvotes 3
I hate the nappy ad where they say it's two times as absorbent. It's twice not two times once twice then it goes to three times four times!!!
I feel better now:lol:

Anyone that says ‘from the get go’ is guaranteed to get me going! What’s wrong with the word ‘beginning’ or ‘start’?
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 20.05.22 07:07 UTC Upvotes 1
Using double words upsets me ....... eg  returning back.  You can't return forward.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 20.05.22 07:08 UTC

>once twice then it goes to three times four times!!!

Once, twice, thrice, then four times!

The most annoying one is the Fairy ad where the baby says "You've got a dishwasher, right?" No, we haven't so shut the f*** up!
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 20.05.22 09:44 UTC Upvotes 2
That's on a par with 'just download the app ........... my phone does NOT do apps, it's an OLD one!!!
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 20.05.22 10:10 UTC

> That's on a par with 'just download the app ........... my phone does NOT do apps, it's an OLD one!!!

Now THAT one hits home.  The Banks are guilty of this big time - they keep emailing me about loading their apps - find but are 'you' going to supply me with a free smart phone?
- By Cava14Una Date 20.05.22 10:28 UTC
Goodness I totally forgot about thrice:grin: You obviously feel strongly about the dishwasher!!
- By CaroleC [gb] Date 20.05.22 13:38 UTC Upvotes 2
I'm with you there. My current phone doesn't even have a camera, but it will do texts and make calls, which is all I need it for. I will be 80 in September, do I really need the stress of learning to operate another complicated device? I think not.
- By Silverleaf79 [gb] Date 20.05.22 14:12 UTC Upvotes 1
My pet hate is the ones that say something like “Nothing cleans better than new Cleano!”

Well fine, if nothing is better I’ll use nothing.
- By Silverleaf79 [gb] Date 20.05.22 14:17 UTC Upvotes 1
Not necessarily ad related, but MB’s double words thing reminded me how much I’m irritated by hypercorrection, specifically the reflexive.

Like someone will say “I spoke to yourself last week…” or “Was the meal okay for yourselves?”. *I’m* the only one that can speak to myself! I swear people now think that using the perfectly correct “you” is somehow impolite.

Similarly why does everyone now say “utilise” when “use” is perfectly sufficient?

Another one for the mix ......... almost unique  or totally unique . either it is or it is not!

and of course the old favorite 'near miss' surely if it 'nearly' missed then it actually HIT
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 20.05.22 16:05 UTC Upvotes 1
Moving away from OP's thread .................. yourself (you) and myself (me) - drives me (myself ) bonkers.  I wonder whether some people think it's 'posh' speak - IT'S NOT!!

Also  CaroleC - you will beat me to the dreaded 80 by a month   and I certainly do NOT need to work out how to use another device, complicated or not.   Was a time when I thought I was keeping up with technology.  Now I've been left way behind

OK so what is an emergency situation ? Whats wrong with an emergency !!!

And now we seem to be burglarized  not have been burgled
- By Silverleaf79 [gb] Date 20.05.22 17:32 UTC
“Very unique” drives my boyfriend mad, to the point where whenever I hear it I have to warn him not to complain about it to me again.
- By Silverleaf79 [gb] Date 20.05.22 17:36 UTC
Another one that is annoying is “When I first met my wife/husband”. Unless you met them AFTER you actually got married, you mean “When I first met the person I later married”.

I can almost guarantee they weren’t your spouse the first time you met them.

We're allowing the American version of our language to take over from the correct English we were brought up to speak.

On a slight tangent, my nephew proudly reported to me that he got 105% on his homework. How? He did better than perfect? He achieved more than the absolute? Rant over.

    teacher needs remedial maths classes !!!
- By kayenine [gb] Date 22.05.22 12:22 UTC Upvotes 1
I can't remember what it's advertising, but I like the one that ends with 'always keep away from children', I do try
- By Nikita [gb] Date 22.05.22 13:13 UTC

Yes!!!
- By Silverleaf79 [gb] Date 22.05.22 14:39 UTC Upvotes 2
Well athletes have somehow been giving 110% for years, so 105% on homework doesn’t seem bad in comparison.

I hate that one too.
- By Honeymoonbeam [gb] Date 22.05.22 18:52 UTC Upvotes 1

I say that every time the ad comes on.  I'd absolutely LOVE to be able to keep away from children.  The further away the better

We're allowing the American version of our language to take over from the correct English we were brought up to speak.

This really annoys me, and I am making this dog related now. "Mixed breed". "Breeding my female". "British Bulldog". "Belgian Malinois". "Female on heat". "Leash". "Puppy shots". "Pet" instead of "stroke". "Service dog" when actually referring to an assistance dog.

Then there are the invented terms/words. "Showers". That should involve water, but suddenly it is used instead of "exhibitor". "Studding". "Locked" instead of "tied".
- By furriefriends Date 22.05.22 21:01 UTC Upvotes 1
And fixed instead of neutered
- By Cava14Una Date 22.05.22 21:21 UTC
When you said Showers I thought you meant wedding showers or baby showers:smile:
- By Silverleaf79 [gb] Date 23.05.22 08:57 UTC
Round here you “fuss” a dog, or “give them some fuss”.
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 23.05.22 09:48 UTC
The one word that gets my SO going - 'Omaarge' instead of Homage.  Every time I hear this, I internally scream waiting for his inevitable reaction ................
- By Silverleaf79 [gb] Date 23.05.22 12:25 UTC
Well “homage” is a French word so the H should be silent. “Omarge” is correct. It’s like “fromage” without the “fr”.
- By RozzieRetriever Date 23.05.22 13:01 UTC
And when did we start referring to the island of Ireland all the time?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.05.22 13:34 UTC

>And when did we start referring to the island of Ireland all the time?

That's an easy one; whenever we want to refer to the whole landmass, both Eire and Northern Ireland.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.05.22 13:39 UTC

>Well “homage” is a French word so the H should be silent. “Omarge” is correct. It’s like “fromage” without the “fr”.

The British pronunciation for when we 'pay homage' to someone is hommidge. (The Google pronunciation guide agrees!) The 'ommarj' pronunciation seems to be an American affectation.
- By Silverleaf79 [gb] Date 23.05.22 14:36 UTC
Sounds to me that it’s Brits that are wrong there. We’ve changed it from the original French, and Americans have changed it back.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.05.22 17:34 UTC Upvotes 1
Also 'ommarj' has a slightly different meaning to 'hommidge', in that you pay hommidge to a person, but a work of art (a painting, a novel, a film and so on) will be an 'ommarj' to a previous work, usually by someone else.
