Using double words upsets me ....... eg  returning back.  You can't return forward.

The most annoying one is the Fairy ad where the baby says "You've got a dishwasher, right?" No, we haven't so shut the f*** up!

Now THAT one hits home.  The Banks are guilty of this big time - they keep emailing me about loading their apps - find but are 'you' going to supply me with a free smart phone?

I'm with you there. My current phone doesn't even have a camera, but it will do texts and make calls, which is all I need it for. I will be 80 in September, do I really need the stress of learning to operate another complicated device? I think not.

Not necessarily ad related, but MB’s double words thing reminded me how much I’m irritated by hypercorrection, specifically the reflexive.

Like someone will say “I spoke to yourself last week…” or “Was the meal okay for yourselves?”. *I’m* the only one that can speak to myself! I swear people now think that using the perfectly correct “you” is somehow impolite.

Similarly why does everyone now say “utilise” when “use” is perfectly sufficient?

This really annoys me, and I am making this dog related now. "Mixed breed". "Breeding my female". "British Bulldog". "Belgian Malinois". "Female on heat". "Leash". "Puppy shots". "Pet" instead of "stroke". "Service dog" when actually referring to an assistance dog.

Then there are the invented terms/words. "Showers". That should involve water, but suddenly it is used instead of "exhibitor". "Studding". "Locked" instead of "tied".

And fixed instead of neutered

That's an easy one; whenever we want to refer to the whole landmass, both Eire and Northern Ireland.

The British pronunciation for when we 'pay homage' to someone is hommidge. (The Google pronunciation guide agrees!) The 'ommarj' pronunciation seems to be an American affectation.

Sounds to me that it’s Brits that are wrong there. We’ve changed it from the original French, and Americans have changed it back.

Also 'ommarj' has a slightly different meaning to 'hommidge', in that you pay hommidge to a person, but a work of art (a painting, a novel, a film and so on) will be an 'ommarj' to a previous work, usually by someone else.
