My Myka (spayed Norwegian Elkhound bitch) was 14 in December, and apart from the Muscle wastage to her head (MMM) which she has had for years, and deafness for the last year or so, she is physically fit, and takes a 4 - 6 mile walk in her stride.

I lost her half sister on 8th April, and for the first time since January 1995 I have an only dog.

She seemed understandably a little confused and needy, and even more social and keen to interact with any dogs and their people on walks. In fact she is keener than ever for walks, now we are not going at Inka's latterly reduced pace and distance.

Then at the beginning if this week she started acting really oddly, confused, distressed wirh trembling.

Alternating between wanting constant reassurance, then acting afraid of objects like her food bowl.  She does eventually eat if not watched, but I caught her making several attempts to get up the nerve last night.

She won't take a treat, and ignored her dentastic for most of the day.

Then she happily goes to her bed, at ither times circles and circles, then suddenly leaping onto sofas ( have put chairs across to keep her off).

On Thursday took her to Vets, and.we are trying her on Vivitonin.

Now vet has given me the 50mg tablets 1 twice a day (so 100mg a day) but data sheet as I read it says 100mg twice daily for a 20kg dog.

I did ring to query, but that vet is on annual leave, and no-one has rung me back yet.

So am I underdosing, and gas anyone found Vivitonin helpful?

I know people who speak highly of it .
We used it with my gsd when he had an attack of labrynthitis but unfortunately it didn't make much difference .
My sil has tired it with her elderly golden who sufferes with dementia and also feels it hasn't made a difference.
I would however try again if needed as its not expensive and many do see improvements.
I belive it works by increasing availability of oxygen to the brain . I am sure someone will be able to explain better than me.
Regarding doseage I would discuss with your vet. If i speak to my sil I will ask her the amount she used

My 14kg collie got 50mg twice a day if that helps Barbara. It didn't really help her I'm afraid, but I have friends who thought it made great improvements in their dogs.

I've used it with a 55k dog and it certainly helped him for the last part of his life. Sorry I can't remember the dose, he's been gone a few years now. Hope it helps your girl.

Thanks folks, she is a bit better, and happy to take foid from us now, so that's less worrying.

Rang vets again to give me a prescription with correct dosage.

Very glad she's eating, hope she keeps improving.

Oh she didn't miss a meal, and has about 1kg in reserve, but she would wait to do it in secret.

I have increased the dose, as have the 100mg tabs on order, so doubling up on the 50mg ones.

£24.48 for 60 100mg tabs (30 days worth).
Plus prescription charge £18, comes to £32.48.

Compared to £30 for 28 50mg tabs from vet.
