Topic Dog Boards / Health / Umbilical hernia

Hi, I've been to view some puppies and the only one available has an umbilical hernia. The owner has been fantastic and told me everything about it and what his vet has said. He's offered to pay for the op to correct it. He's also told me to ask my vet about etc. My only question is that in the future if I were to breed from the bitch would it be ok to? I have read various posts on the Internet but with the Internet and any question there are many contradicting answers. Any information would be greatly accepted. Thanks

Personally, I wouldn't breed from a bitch with a hernia, repaired or not. I know that some people say "it's because the bitch chewed the cords too short" or some such excuse, but I knew a litter where the bitch (who'd had a small hernia repaired) was given her puppies after the cords had been cut with a good length remaining, and they didn't get chewed at all, but between 4 and 5 weeks all the litter developed umbilical hernias, one after the other. Three had to be repaired as an emergency before the pups went to their new homes and the others were done at a later date. So it seems there's a strong hereditary element; if you want to breed, don't get a pup with a hernia.

Neither would I.  FWIW.

No, do not breed from a bitch with an umbilical hernia.

Whether this is a viable purchase for you  depends on what you want the dog for.  I was 'gifted' a dog pup that had had the op, having been born with an umbilical hernia....and that was fine as I was looking for a working dog, and not something to breed from - there were also other issues with this pup.
Even more importantly for a bitch though...in my opinion.
