
Personally, I wouldn't breed from a bitch with a hernia, repaired or not. I know that some people say "it's because the bitch chewed the cords too short" or some such excuse, but I knew a litter where the bitch (who'd had a small hernia repaired) was given her puppies after the cords had been cut with a good length remaining, and they didn't get chewed at all, but between 4 and 5 weeks
all the litter developed umbilical hernias, one after the other. Three had to be repaired as an emergency before the pups went to their new homes and the others were done at a later date. So it seems there's a
strong hereditary element; if you want to breed, don't get a pup with a hernia.
