Hello, following on from a post about finding a puppy and receiving very helpful responses I was wondering if there were any suggestions for good books on raising/training a puppy. Particularly any that relate to teaching children about puppy/dog ownership too! We are on various waiting lists and a couple of breeders look really promising...however, whilst waiting I’d really like to turn my attention to making sure I’m well informed about the early puppy days and beyond!
Any titles/authors to consider would be really useful please.
(I have looked through previous posts to make sure I’m not repeating the question but couldn’t really see anything!)
Many thanks

The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey. It contains up to date training methods and socialisation ideas. We put it in our puppy pack.

Whilst not specifically aimed at puppies, I can thoroughly recommend The Other End of the Lead by Janet Finlay which is really aimed at understanding the affect the owner has on the dog's behaviour.

https://www.thefamilydog.com/stop-the-77/ is a handy set of muscial videos.

The main message for children I think is understanding consent based interaction with dogs - much like they themselves would not want strangers coming over and giving them hugs, neither do all dogs like it!  This is also such a useful video I think to really train ourselves to actually see what the dog is experiencing in petting rather than what we wish it was experiencing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cGDYI-s-cQ

Also, this is a super little story book to help children (and their families!) see the consequence of different approaches to raising puppies.  Puppy Tales: Jack & Billy by Steven Goodall.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Puppy-Tales-Billy-Steven-Goodall/dp/1781333378/ref=sr_1_19?dchild=1&keywords=tale+of+two+puppies&qid=1591516949&s=books&sr=1-19

The other main take away in relation to children and dogs I think is to accept that you will have to supervise and shape ALL interactions for YEARS and so you'll need strategies to ensure that the children and the puppy/dog are safe from each other at times when you can't full pay attention to what is happening.  This is harder than you might think:-).

Agree with everyone else about The Perfect Puppy book too:-)

Really helpful advice re the children. It’s an area we really will want to focus on so that both puppy and children enjoy each other’s company!
