Can anyone tell me if they have any experience of hormone testosterone replacement in a castrated male dog. My dog was castrated 3 months ago due to medical reasons (tumour in testicles, biopsy afterwards found it to be benign), he is 11 years old and is not coping well now, he seems scared during walks and just seems a lot less happier and maybe even depressed.

He used to love his walks (wanted 4 walks a day!) and within 2 weeks of the operation, he completely changed his personality.

He has been checked over at the vets (blood, thyroid, urine tests as well as physical examination) and has a clean bill of health.

I just want my old dog back, it is breaking my heart to see him like this.

Ps If anyone has got this treatment for your dog, please can you tell me the cost?

I'll contact someone I know who had one of hers on HRT. She is a member here as Nova, but haven't seen her post recently.

Hi, I used HRT on one of my dogs who was castrated in similar circumstance. It was in tablet form and although it was not cheap it did help. The main problem he had was he was attracting unwanted attention from intact males including mine. Give it a try you have nothing to lose and with luck it my cure your boys problem

Can you remember how much it cost? Do you know the name of the tablets? Were there any side effects? Did he just go back to normal with the HRT?

PS thank you so much for your reply, Jackie. I have not been able to find any info about this online

Sorry can't remember the name of the tablets but your vet will sort something out for you. Many people castrate their dogs young and do not realise the difference it can make to the well being of the dog as they accept the dog as it ts.

Thanks for your reply. You've given me some hope that it might be possible to improve things for my dog. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much though. My vet is researching using testosterone as she has not done it before so hopefully I will have a treatment plan soon. I have never been in favour of routine castration and I am still heart broken at having had to do this to him, even for medical reasons.

Just a couple more questions please,

How long after castration did you start giving the tablets? (It has now been 3 month since my dog had the castration)

Did your dog just go back to normal or was there still a difference?

It was about three months, think the tablets I used were from the USA that is however just a thought. My boy had feminisation syndrome, not that uncommon but it was causing much trouble in my pack and making his live a hell,he was getting very depressed. I wished after I had only had the one removed but being wise after the event is something I seem good at. All the best, sure you will have it sorted soon.
