Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Chewing bedding

Yesterday we bought trampoline beds for our three dogs.

This morning one of them has chewed almost right through one corner of the canvas - even though we put our own mattress and blankets on top. One of the dogs never chews or rips bedding, but I know the other two do. Impossible to tell which one did it last night.

They haven't had beds for a few days at all as they ripped the stuffing out of them. What do I do with two dogs that like chewing bedding??

Don't give them anything you mind getting chewed.

I always thought vetbed was chew proof until my now almost 13 year old decided to turn several pieces into doilies, still have a piece with  a hole the size of a biscuit in the middle.

Up to then I used to always send the existing vet bed off with puppies to their new homes and buy new, but now the puppies get new and I can see how well the old lasts.

My heavy duty green back Profleece pieces are still going strong over 13 years later.

Some of the non slip ribbed backed stuff quite quickly goes flat and tatty, though the better quality (higher priced heavy duty deluxe version ones from Profleece are better).

Ordinary backed fleece lasts best, but the extra thick stays the course.

other than that I have the hard plastic beds, but the most recent pup has done quite the job chewing the edges fo my kitchen beds.

I never have any squishy beds as invariably by the time the youngest is beyond chewing in an other year I am likely to have another pup.

Thanks for your thoughts.

We always had soft beds until we got my second spaniel. In her teething stage she ripped the stuffing out of the corners, no matter how many times we sewed it up again. So we moved the soft beds inside and gave them mattresses in the utility room where they sleep at night.

That lasted a while, then the older dog (completely different breed) started going for them, maybe out of boredom as he only did it at night. The past week they've just had blankets, but then he started ripping bits off those.

I've had a look at so called 'indestructible' dog beds but reviews say they are soft underneath, so I'm sure the dogs would have it in pieces. Yes I thought about plastic beds too, but again, it would probably be good chewing material.

Let's see how tonight goes...

All of mine chew vetbed, two will pull apart any form of stuffed bedding, the only thing which hasn't been touched bar a bit of puppy chewing is a plastic hard bed, however it needs covers so they get vetbed.
Tuffies are supposed to be indestructible but they are very pricey but everyone raves about them who have splurged.

I gave up on squishy dog beds years ago -they all got trashed no matter how expensive they were and how dog proof they promised to be. So, we just have masses of vet bed/fleece and soft throws -very cheap to cover the bedding in the car   However, our 11 year old GR , Flinti is an obsessive chewer of vet bed. We call it Flinti's' wo-wo ' and he likes nothing better than to trot out into the field with a piece in his mouth and have a good tear and chew. We find pieces everywhere. I laugh when I remember the day some puppy viewers were round and I was extolling the virtues of 'indestructible vet bedding ' and they looked out of the window to see Flinti in the act of massacring a large piece.

My two year old was a little madam for destroying bedding as youngster. She even learned to unzip some of them. Whatever was in the middle would come out and get thrown everywhere, she thought it was great fun. Now she's mature and sophisticated  she doesn't bother, but I did make a cotton cover to go over the bed so she can't get at it so maybe that has helped.

I would agree that rigid plastic beds are the thing for chewers but I have seen them with very ragged edges and they can be sharp when chewed.  My favourite story is a posh friend who ordered bespoke matching wicker baskets, rectangular with small legs, for her 2 young labradors, they were to go either side of the Aga, they were reduced to going inside the Aga within 3 weeks!!  I have vet bed that is 20 years old with no holes and a few bits with small holes, maybe give them vet bed with something like a blanket which is easier to chew and keeps them busy. After seeing a small terrier reducing the "almost dog proof" toys to bits in record time I don't think there is anything which dogs can't chew through if they want to.

A cheap duvet with a cover on - cheap to replace, and oddly a lot of bed-rippers don't touch them!  River likes to de-stuff duvets occasionally, but she's never gone through a cover to do it, even just a really cheap one.

I know it's frustrating, it's just trial and error :)

The worst part is thinking of the money spent on beds and bedding.

I can highly recommend the Kuranda dog beds. I have Ridgebacks and have the XXL aluminium beds with the heaviest duty fabric. 3 of my girls can easily fit on together if they want. Nobody has chewed it and it's easy to clean. Even digging hasn't got through it! I put either duvets or fleeces on the top depending on the weather

Yeah, that's the thing, lost count of how much I've got though in the last 3 years...virtually every champ show I go to, I'm buying fleece bedding mainly due to one little jaws. I would gladly install a zip for her mouth...lol...most of my others are fine. I bought 3 pieces(£30) & hoping that will last until I go to Three Counties...

Haha!! Well I'd never even heard of fleece bedding until I came on the forum, we don't really have it here in Oz, but I will look into it :)

Ditto piece of vet bed in plastic bed.

The edges of plastic bed sometimes get chewed and are rubbed down or the bed eventually replaced, as they are inexpensive.

the hard beds and the vet bed means no lingering smells, so easy to keep sanitary.
