Topic Dog Boards / Health / pug with sever breathing probs on yorkshire vet
- By groveclydpoint [gb] Date 27.04.16 10:33 UTC
Their was pretty horrific case of black pug on yorkshire vet last night
the pug could hardly walk due to sever breathing issues it was really horrific the vet widened nose and took quite bit of skin from back of throat
after op pug was able to walk and breath no problems
Both vets said that pugs are getting made this wAy and they are doing lot of ops on pugs to widen noses and take skin at back of throats away so pugs are able to breath
is this way pugs are getting bred now ??

Not all by any means, I don't know a lot about the breed but Gwen who is a member here was, I believe, involved with a pug agility team and a few years ago there was a cani-cross demo round NEC as part of Crufts and they had a brief shot of a pug crossing the finish.
Like any breed pick your breeder with care.

Yes I was watching and yes, it was horrendous BUT how much improvement there really was is debatable.   Watching this programme, and Noel Fitzpatricks programme too, I just shudder about what's going on out there.   I'd love to know what percentage of these dogs come from BYBs and how many from 'reputable breeders'!   Much as breeding isn't ever an exact science, and what happens with a puppy after it leaves a 'reputable breeder', does play a part.

It would be wrong to suggest this is how Pugs are ALL being bred these days however.

Looking at the super vet last week, and the 2 st Bernards , brother and sister, at 12 mths old, the boy having to be PTS due to bad hips and elbows, and the surviving sister having to have both hips replaced.

It would be interesting to see where these dogs came from, as its a bit coincidental that both should have severe hip and elbow problems.

The fact they were sold littermates speaks volumes of the breeder I reckon.

There was something on that program a while ago re a dog with severe hip displacia that had to be euthanised . They thought is was great they the owner got another  one from the same breeder WTF.

It must of been really bad if supervet had to pts the dog
does kc not step in and do something about it .they are suppose to promote happy healthy dogs and breeding ??
But when you watch supervet etc their is so many dogs with issues
when i first started showing i was shocked tio see hound bred with really bad hip win bob.hound group and then bis i was told that owner/hanlder could show 3 legged dog and still win

My old pointer went lame at last show i pulled out other classes i was doing same if i had lame horse i would never show it
that really shocked me to see lame dog with bad hip win everything

He didn't, he saved it. The other one had been PTS by a different vet.

There's nothing to even say they were KC registered. Lots of people think "papers" doesn't matter for a pet so will buy unregistered pups -possibly bred from endorsed parents.

But when you watch supervet etc their is so many dogs with issues

And a lot of them totally preventable -but that's what puppy farms and back yard breeders do, they do no health testing. Again there's nothing whatsoever to say any of the dogs came from good breeders. It's all these BYBs giving good breeders a bad name, as the general public do not understand the difference.

Well that's obviously not correct. The odd dog that does not move well occasionally slips through, but general speaking a dog without good movement stands no chance. If a lame dog wins it should be reported on the day.

I've shown for a long time. If a horse is "doped" then unless the horse is blood tested how is the judge to know otherwise ? If people suspect a problem they should report it to the show sec. sometimes I wonder if its just sour grapes .

Lame in the ring - reminds me of a time when, at Crufts actually, I was standing with another exhibitor just outside the ring watching the Open bitch class.   When the 'red hot favourite' first moved off, with the others, we looked at each other and said 'she's lame'.   She was BUT as she continued to move round the ring, she freed up.   She went on to take the BCC.  Hum.

Going slightly OT, I would have liked to know why they had the boy PTS but the girl operated on.....
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 28.04.16 14:16 UTC
My 11 year old is in no way lame, but does take a couple of minutes to warm up now. :-)
- By suejaw Date 28.04.16 14:21 UTC
Neither front or back could hold the weight if another limb were operated on. They have to do one leg at a time and the burden say to the elbows if a hip was operated on would be immense.

"Going slightly OT, I would have liked to know why they had the boy PTS but the girl operated on..... "

It was a different vet and I think most probably it was felt the male dog wasn't a candidate for repair?    Or perhaps they didn't know about the Supervet option!!!
