Hi All
I am after some advice re my bitch who is day 62 and has been in first stage labour for 36 hours.  This is her second litter and the first litter she went to day 60 and first stage was only 8 hours.   She has had white creamy discharge which I know to be normal and there has been no green or black which is good news!  Just feeling a little anxious any reassurance or advice would be appreciated

There will be people with more experience along soon but in the mean time, how is your bitch? Is she digging her bedding, straining to push, becoming distressed or tired, does she have a glazed look in her eyes as if she's shutting down from fatigue?

If she is stuggling or becoming tired, you really need veterinary advice. If however, she is in the first stages, content and not straining in any way, I'd just watch her.

Without naming the breed, is she likely to whelp early because of her size or if she is carrying a bigger than average litter or does this breed usually go to 63 days? Some toy breeds only go to day 60 and my breed usually goes to 63 but my bitch delivered friday on day 58 because she was carrying 10. Last time she only had a singleton but whelped bang on day 63.

If she is happy to, perhaps you could go for drive in the car as that usually gets things moving or even a gentle stroll down the road and back (obviously not if you live on a road thats a mile long!) but remember to take a towel with you in case she decides to start pushing. If you are truly worried call the vet.

Good luck!

Hi
Thanks for responding.  She is very happy in herself apart from pacing and heavy breathing, which she did all night last night!  I checked her temp last week and it dropped yesterday and gone off her food today.  I tried to take her temp today but she is getting to distressed.  She is a medium large breed and chocolate, her last litter was 10 pups, they average 60-63 days.  The Vet orginally thought she would deliver early as she was very big.  We had a scan done last week and all looked good.

Some digging and getting in and out of whelping box

My gut would say not very far off.

My girl spent all of thursday night on our bed, losing the mucus plug (yuck....but you gotta do what you gotta do) but didn't actually whelp till after 1pm. She was panting heavily from thursday lunch time and obviously uncomfortable but not in distress.

Just watch her closely,  make the room/box like a den to help her relax, I had soothing cd on and talked to her constantly in a quiet voice. She went out for a poo, tried straining, came in and whelped the first pup.

Keep us posted

Any news?

I have been through this many times.  I would have the heartbeat rates of the puppies checked with ultrasound just to be sure they are OK.
