I've  been asked if I would like to join the committee of a club...I'm rather worried as to what this intails and what rules are there. I know it's all very hush hush, but I'm unsure of the rest. I'm very happy to work at a show, but wonder if anyone can fill me in on a sort of job description...thanks in advance

Committees should definitely NOT be "hush hush" in any way whatsoever; the meetings should be open to all members of the club, the minutes of the meeting noted down and sent to all members or printed in the club newsletter.

What it will entail depends on your role on the committee. There can be anything from chairman to secretary, treasurer etc etc to just a "plain" committee members. Those just on the committee would not normally have a particular role except to attend the meetings, vote on issues, give your opinion etc. Often volunteers may be asked for to carry out various tasks at the club shows but then it is up to you to volunteer or not, and of course be available for anyone interested in the breed to contact for advice as your name will be listed as a committee member -although most people will naturally contact the secretary in the first instance.

Thanks Goldmali,
Thank you, for your information, In relation to hush hush, I think I should have used the term confidential and what is said during meetings is private.

What's said in meetings should be minuted so actually it's the opposite of hush hush :) Any member should be allowed access to the minutes. So it's not confidential, like goldmali says :)

My tip: It's always great to join a committee completely open minded.

My suggestion/advice would be to help out at the particular club at their shows/ringcraft/match nights before deciding if you want to be a serving committee member. There are pros & cons & it's not for everyone. By 'helping out' first you can get an insight to the 'background' of it & go from there.  I have served on various  dog committee's & been a secretary. Good luck in your decision

I would agree with other posters Mattysmum and would also say that the amount of work and involvement can vary depending on what sort of Club it is - breed club, canine society, ringcraft club etc.

Thank you, everyone, I think I might just help out, which I do already, I'm prepared to commit to duties, but until I get more of a feel for this dog stuff..I will just take a back seat..thanks again
