My girl went to stay at our chosen studs house on the 15th for a wk. I'm wondering what your opinions are & is this even possible. She's now tired a lot, overheating & fidgety, absolutely ravenous then the next day she's not fussed & has thrown up twice. She has like a clear gel like discharge.. It doesn't drip but comes off if I wipe her. She's very clingy too.

I'm telling myself to not get my hopes up. But it's so hard, I will have her scanned in a few wks.

What do you think?

WAas she mated, more than once, though my largest litter to date of 9 was to one mating (if it's the best/right day).

Well we hope so, they were together a wk but the stud only witnessed once, but walked in to the room in the morning and thought "he was just finishing". So I'm not 100% how many they had

I don't mean to be unkind, but that is no way to manage stud work.

A dog and bitch should not be left unsupervised.  They can damage each other during mating, and of course as you now find you don't know if and when they mated.

In my breed we do not over handle, and allow the dog and bitch time to play, and for them to mate without interference with discreet supervision, but as soon as the dog has mounted the bitch you gently steady the bitch, and ensure she doesn't turn turtle during the tie, which they can find unpleasant.

Also help the dog turn, if the bitch moves half way through this the dog could be hurt, while on three legs, pull his back or pull a hip etc.

In many larger and toy breeds things are very much more hands on, for the comfort and safety of both parties.

Of course wild dogs, stray dogs and poorly managed dogs often manage alone (especially when you don't want them mating ;) ) but it's not worth putting your dogs at risk unnecessarily.

Was she progesterone tested?  Was this a proven stud who knows his job (correct timing).

Are you saying that they were unsupervised matings?

Snap!

Sorry.. I meant the morning she walked in her husband had left the door open by accident & the stud went in beside my dog about 6am and when she came downstairs and discovered them he looked like he was finishing. She's a very respected breeder & he's a well proven stud. But the accident did occur.

It's always husbands ;)

So how many actually planned/witnessed mattings occurred?

If there was just this then I'd doubt she would be in whelp as otherwise why did he not mate her through the rest of the season.  Was she being difficult, did he lack interest.

That sort of scenario would make me think the bitch had not ovulated, if they had ample opportunities to mate throughout the week, perhaps you took her too late, or brought her away too early?

She witnessed 2 slips & 1 tie

My bitch was playing & teasing but became distressed when the stud owner tried to help things so she stopped. They live 3 hours away each way that's why she stayed the wk. So do you think it's all just coincidence or a phantom?

In my breed we tend to find slips are when the bitch isn't quite ready, (but in some b4reeds especially toys where the boys are often smaller than the girls, slips are the norm or frequently result in pups) were they before or after the tie?

Only need one good mating at the right time for a litter.

Only time will tell, as phantoms and real pregnancies have same symptoms.

Your best bet is a  scan with an experienced person, at over 28 days from last mating, ideally 35 days.

Yes she's a small breed.

Yes the slips were before the tie.

Time will tell I guess

Any reason you didn't try for a second tie, or had he lost interest, if so chances are, assuming he is an experienced stud, he got the time right.

Indeed only time will tell.

She was totally over it, and he wasn't that fussed. Was clear they were finished. Took her on day 8 till 15th.

Sounds all good. Older breeders in my breed say the best way to know you have the right time is to mate the bitch until she will no longer stand or the male looses interest, if you know she ahs goen over then you know you haven't been too early.

In my girls day 15 would only be when they were first willing to stand, or if they were willing the male would not oblige, and one bitch wasn't ready until day 18 - 22.

Then some bitches regardless of breed or what their female relatives do, are just awkward ovulating very early or extremely late.
