Off to the vets later with Betty (9 in Feb).

She has been fine no noticeable issues health wise but she started moulting a bit about three to four weeks ago. Nothing strange in that but she has a single coat so doesnt moult excessively like my other girls have .

It didn't click until last week that something was wrong as the amount of hair on the floor wasn't a concern until I realise as Puds is n longer with us why on earth was there so much hair as she was the mounting monster.

I then noticed some bald patches and having a good look all over the patches are all over the place but mainly legs , under carriage and neck. The hair is now coming out in large lumps and it is the undercoat and main hair.

My first thoughts were mange as she has a couple of sores but I am now thinking cushings although she hasn't got all the symptoms .
Large water intake- no noticeable diff
Frequent urination and possible incontinence- no noticeable diff
Ravenous appetite- yes but difficult to say if she is worse (being a Lab) but she is a lot more protective of her food and can follow on with action after warning growls
Pot belly-slightly but not that noticeable
Thin skin- there us a change to the look of her skin
Hair loss or recurrent skin diseases - she has had a couple of sores and patches of bare skin over the last 12 months but that was treated as exzema
Muscle wastage- not noticeable small working lab so always let quite lean
Lethargy- no really as she is a tigger type lab
Excessive panting- yes she has had episodes of excessive panting but put that down to when she has got herself wound up as she can get over excited .

Let's see what my get says I think we will be full bloods anyway and get some skin scraps done at the same time.

I had a BMD with cushings and it took 12 months to finally realise what was wrong ! The signs are very subtle to begin with. She lost her coat slowly, she developed a pot belly so gradually it was hard to notice. She drank a little more each day over a year and peed bigger puddles so slowly we never really noticed. She slowed down but at 8 years old we just put it down to her age (8 is good for a Bernese) She always had a good appetite.
The blood test for cushings is odd, they take blood then inject (I think its a steroid ) and then 1 hour later take bloods again to compare and read the results.
She settled well on meds but a combination of the cushings and her age went against her. We had another year after diagnosis then she had a series of strokes. We let her go when she could not understand why she could not walk properly and before she got too bad. She was a strong independent girl who had never been frightened of anything in her life. She gave me too much of herself for me to let her suffer.
Its a funny illness but can be well controlled. Merlot developed a lot of calcium plaques on her back, very unsightly but not painful. They did improve a little with daily washes to ensure they never got infected with a secondary problem.
PM me if you like I will try to help if indeed it is cushings.

Thanks Aileen .What are calcium plaques ?
- By Merlot [gb] Date 18.11.14 12:53 UTC
Its calcinosis cutis. Calcium rises to the skins surface and causes hard plaques under the skin (Really hard) The can sometimes crack open. They need treating to make sure they do not cause problems. With Merlot I washed her skins on her back every day to make sure there was no chance of any cracking  allowing a secondary infection in. They are really horrid but if kept dry and clean seem not to be at all painful.

Could by thyroid as well as again they don't necessarily get all the symptoms.

I am sure we law ill get to the bottom of it . I have just noticed a growth small growth on her side which has just come visable because of the hair loss , about the size of a tick .

Oh well let's see what the vet says

I have a Yorkshire Terrier with Cushings.  I hate the flipping disease.

He thinks it it an allergic reaction maybe flea even though I had checked and couldnt see any signs ( cats are all free) so she is on a course of steroids for a couple of weeks and a couple of baths in hibscrub once a week.
The lump is fine and nothing to be concerned about.

I am going I flea spray the two carpets we have in the house just to make sure.

Good news - just hope now that it clears up quickly :)
