Topic Dog Boards / General / Cold calling re:Champdogs
- By tooolz Date 11.11.14 13:10 UTC
I wonder if anyone else had a call, from what sounded like a busy call centre, regarding Champdogs new mobile compatible version? Champdogs Mobile Site
They were offering to sell me a new website design compatible with this new application.
I told them where to go.

No but last week we had some heavily accented man on the phone saying he was from Microsoft and that our computer had been hacked.   He was so insistent that in the end I put the phone down.   He called back IMMEDIATELY and my husband answered - same thing.   One more call, same thing.   He'd left a number which we made a note of - called my IT man who told me it was a scam.   Called the non-emergency police line and reported it.

Be warned.  And I'm sure everybody knows NOT to give any personal information out over the phone, or email.

No but last week we had some heavily accented man on the phone saying he was from Microsoft and that our computer had been hacked.

Last time that happened I replied I would get my brother in law to sort it for me, and his name is Bill Gates. :)

Had plenty of dodgy calls but never one about CD.

The 'Microsoft' calls are a huge scam!

We had these, quite a few.

Then one day they called and I had some time on my hands :-D

I kept him going for half an hour, pretending to do what he asked, then huge panic because something had gone wrong - black Screen, blue screen etc.  He even discussed it with another person, said to be his supervisor.  In the end he was asking what OS I had on my system, and I told him he already knew as he'd phoned me.

After half an hour I let slip that our OS is Linux -  OMG the language!   ROFL  didn't think he'd be able to swear so fluently and fruitily

A year later we had another call (they must have forgotten us) which DS answered.  There followed a long discussion (20 minutes) which ended in the caller yelling at DS about how he lived in LONDON, and more swearing.

Not had any more calls from 'microsoft' since !!!???!!!     Shame, as I love wasting their time :-)

Anyone cold calling here, either gets the phone put down on them, or if I have the time, they get the OAP treatment.

Caller - "Can I speak to..."  "Is that Mrs..."
Me in a shaky 'old lady' voice    -  " Hello?  Yes,   Just a minute, I'll get her...."  Leaves phone so they can hear noise of the house, clock ticking etc.

A minute later

Me - "Hello?"
Caller - "Can I speak to MRs..."
Me - " Yes, just a minute...."

This can go on as long as the person plays the game :-D   Some will play for quite a long time before they get fed up :-D

And that's less time for them to call up vulnerable people :-D

Of course, if a number is left on the phone, it's reported to fraud, but they rarely leave a number

With the 'mIcrosoft' people I thank them politely and then ask them for the password so that I can give them access. I can keep that going for some time. :-)

Or I'll say "I'll just put you on hold", and go off to the loo. They've usually gone by the time I get back.

Or there's the reply "This is the police. You're through to a crime scene. How well did you know the victim? I'll need to take your details for our enquiries". I've never yet managed to reach the end ...
- By Daisy [gb] Date 11.11.14 16:39 UTC
I just don't waste my time :) I hang up on anyone I don't want to speak to, unless I am expecting the call or know exactly who they are or why they are calling.

That is marvellous!!

If I pick up the phone and hear background chatter they have about 5 seconds to speak or phone goes down, usually goes down anyway if they do manage to beat the clock!

>If I pick up the phone and hear background chatter they have about 5 seconds to speak or phone goes down

I don't put down the phone, as I want to waste their money.  I just place the phone down still connected.  And go and do something else more interesting.  Like going into the garden and picking up dog poo.  :-)
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 12.11.14 09:13 UTC
I like to keep them hanging on too - loving some of the suggestions here.   This man was sooooo beligerent.   I did hang up on him initially but he called straight back and shouted 'DON'T PUT THE PHONE DOWN ON ME'!    Strangely, I thought, there was a number on our caller-display.   It was as I recall, an 0300 number.    Re sounding like an OAP.   I am one, so that wouldn't be difficult plus my husband (stroke) has cog.reasoning difficulties and it's not hard for him to sound 'odd'.

There is a funny cartoon which says "put a 3 year old on the line and tell her it's Santa Claus".

LOL, I got one of those two weeks ago.  I must have got the newbie Microsoft scam guy, when he said, in his heavy accent, that he was calling from Microsoft I said "Well sure you are."  And he was quiet.  Then he said it again and I replied, "REALLY."  He didn't say anything else so I hung up.  I was hoping for more fun.

A trick I use sometimes is pick up the phone but not say anything.  I do this for numbers that have way off area codes or are designated private caller.  Then when the other end hangs up I don't.  My understanding from a friend who used to work for Bell is that if I don't hang up it ties up their line for a while.  Mine too but I don't mind.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.11.14 12:55 UTC
It might work differently in different countries, but in the UK it's the caller's phone that ends the call, not the recipient's. If the recipient hangs up but the caller doesn't, the line stays open. This happens quite a lot at work, when someone's mobile phone speed-dials us accidentally - perhaps when they're walking the dog with the phone in their pocket - and they don't know they've rung us. It doesn't matter how many times I hang up, every time I pick up the receiver again the line is still open and I can hear the rustling of their clothes as they walk, and background chat. It's really annoying because it stops ther people calling us, and it might be an emergency.

Yes I had that call, I said no too.
- By samsmum [gb] Date 12.11.14 18:51 UTC
just a warning if you have elderly or vulnerable relatives. We had the "Microsoft" call, but when my OH told them to go away the "gentleman" on the other end of the phone told him that he had our address and him and some friends would be coming to our house. My OH told them to take care not to meet up with the dogs when they arrived, but that sort of threat could frighten the life out of some people.

Re the Microsoft call.............I just say 'I don't have a computer'..................did have one guy say 'but everbody has one'.............'well I don't..goodbye'
- By MsTemeraire Date 12.11.14 19:25 UTC
I just tell them I have an Apple Mac. It worked when I did - and guess what.... it still works now I don't!
- By Daisy [gb] Date 12.11.14 19:26 UTC

> but that sort of threat could frighten the life out of some people

One reason why you don't talk to them and just put the phone down - then they get no opportunity to scare anyone !
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 12.11.14 21:03 UTC Edited 12.11.14 21:05 UTC
I so seldom answer my house phone now. My siblings send me a text message to say they are going to call me at a certain time. Other than the  Microsoft man and problems with my Windows,( I have asked if WD40 would help me to open them), What led to this situation was following a visit to A&E, I kept getting no end of calls from insurance and personal injury claims companies, coincidence ?
JG I like the crime scene line.

My son answers these calls with "It is done....but there is blood everywhere" lol

Now that REALLY suits my sense of humour.  :-)

You seem to be the only one who has had a call like this Tooolz - I wonder how they knew that you used Champdogs - not that many people have actually heard of it - and I know a lot of people with dogs.  I would be a bit worried if this was not a genuine call.  Have you contacted Champdogs themselves?   We use caller display and just don't answer any calls that are international, unknown or 08 something.  If it a genuine person who really wants to talk to us they will leave a message.  It is very annoying though to have to leap up and take my glasses off to read the display!  Or in my husband's case to find his glasses and by the time he has they have rung off :-D     We do have ringtones assigned to our friends which makes life a bit easier.    How dare these people gate crash our homes.
- By tooolz Date 14.11.14 19:26 UTC
It was specifically regarding Champdogs Mobile Site and ensuring that my 'Presence' and website will be compatible on mobile devices.
He did say I was his first call :-) Poor man :-(
- By Paula Dal [gb] Date 14.11.14 23:28 UTC
As I said above, I had the Champdogs call too, it was a girl and I said no thank you. She asked if I knew anyone who would be interested and I said no.
- By ceejay Date 17.11.14 18:44 UTC
I just tried going onto the main site and had a pop-up asking me if I want to go on Champdogs mobile :-D   Sounds like they are not having much luck - not interested either!
- By Henri3402 [gb] Date 20.11.14 15:13 UTC
Yes I had that phone call too, no thank you I'm not really interested was my reply. I don't think he even said goodbye!!

Just been called -guy called Sean -something about EMS (?) services. I'd just come in the door laden with shopping bags and dogs etc so did not give him any time. My husband had answered the phone and been told it was Champdogs and asked for me.
- By WestCoast Date 20.11.14 16:30 UTC
Times are getting hard and changing eh?  :)
- By MarkR Date 04.12.14 12:13 UTC
Please can anyone who has been called by this company confirm whether the caller is claiming to be from Champdogs.
- By tooolz Date 04.12.14 13:05 UTC
Sadly I didn't ask much , I was brusque and said I wasn't interested.
He said that his company ( never suggested he was actually from CD) would provide a mobile compatible website for my Champdogs account.
- By suejaw Date 04.12.14 13:17 UTC
I've had emails from companies relating to cd too
- By Jan bending Date 05.12.14 06:05 UTC
My husband took the call . 'Sean' asked for me saying he was from Champdogs -or words to that effect.
