Topic Dog Boards / General / RSPCA fund research into health of dogs

The telegraph this morning carries a great article on page 18 about a study (Paid for by the RSPCA misusing funds again) into wether pedigree dogs are healthier than mongrels. This one may yet backfire on them as the study found that there was no difference except that pure bred dogs have slightly more ear infections, obesity and skin growths, whereas mongrels are MORE prone to degenerative joint disease.
Its worth getting a copy to read if you are not normally a Telegraph reader. JH had to have a few words at the end that come over as sour grapes, whereas the statement from Caroline Kisco is at least diplomatic and sounds less fanatical.
Not sure about the use of RSPCA funds freely given to help all animals in need being misused to try and  attack once again pure bred dogs...that one has backfired big time on them !

I know people aren't dogs - obviously.    But humans are the most numerous, randomly bred species on the planet.     And according to those who denigrate pedigree dogs, therefore we should be healthier.   But this isn't true.

Researchers have been studying human differences in longevity, heredity and predisposition to disease for decades.    Twin studies are considered the gold standard, since identical twins have identical genes, and both  fraternal and identical twins are likely to have near identical nurture.   Yet researchers aren't finding what they expected regarding health and longevity.

Food for thought for all those who believe that if it wasn't for pedigree dog breeders, dogs would be far healthier ;-)

Good post merlot, well you were quite ahead of the government on this as it's been announced today there is going to be an enquiry as to if the rspaca is 'to powerfull', from what i understand at the moment of writing the enquiry is going to be wider than just the rspca, it is going to be specificaly on 'animal charities' in gene', I guess the extent of a government enquiry will become clearer later on today, 22/9/1015 - your post was 18 months ago.
