Hi Forum,

I took my bitch to be mated last Monday & Wednesday (13th and 15th day), my bitch started bleeding again day 17 of her season and is still bleeding now, the blood has never been a bright red its almost on the verge of brown. No smells or thick discharge but i am worried. Any experiences?

Thanks

I had a bitch that was mated on days 16 and 18 and carried on bleeding for another 25 days but this was normal for her she always had very long seasons. I thought there was no chance of her being in pup but she went on to have a healthy litter of six pups, however it may be worth getting her looked at and put on antibiotics.

By coincidence I was having this same conversation with my bitch's breeder yesterday. She was saying that  one of her bitches (grandmother to mine) carries on bleeding for 5 weeks but nevertheless has produced 3 good sized, health litters.

My bitches have always bled throughout mating, and continued to bleed until the end of the normal season.  I don't find it abnormal.  Just usual for mine.  I've never had this have any effect on the litters.

Not forgetting there is always a risk of some infection going on, perhaps the result of the male carrying something, I had one bitch, only one, of mine who was mated twice around days 11 and 13.  Good matings.   She came home and went back to a blood-coloured discharge.   She wasn't by any means ill so I just kept an eye on her, thinking that mating has never taken.     The pregnancy was uneventful and she had 9 beautiful healthy puppies.   So good that we actually kept 3 of the 9, brought them back with us to the UK from Canada, and one became a UK Champion, the first and so far only Canadian-bred Basset bitch to take a UK title.   Her sister was always in her shadow, but still did enough to be permamently qualified for Crufts.   The male's bite went under whilst in quarantine but was used, with her full knowledge, by another breeder, twice, and from those matings, is back of a lot of hounds in the UK now.

I'd keep an eye on your bitch in case she has picked up an infection, and fingers crossed all will be well.   And talk to your vet about antibiotics?

Thank you all for your responses. Checked her bedding this morning, nothing much there so I'm hoping thats the ending to an Era. If, of course i am wrong and it starts back up, i will waste no time in getting her checked by the vet. Again, thank you all for your responses.

UPDATE: My girl whelped 5 puppies on day 57 (monday night through to early tuesday), 3 boys and 2 girls, Each puppy was born with 1 contraction and within 20 minutes of each other, all head first, breathing and moving. Couldn't of wished for a better whelp for my first ever whelping, and what an amazing mom she is too!

Blimey!!!   Talk about beginners luck!!!    My first experience with anything other than Basset whelping (hard enough to get it in, never mind out!) was when we lived with some people who had Jackies.   Her bitch went into labour and produced a puppy roughly every 30 minutes.   No problems, and she was a perfect mother.   Made me SICK - and think about switching breeds............. not really but it was an eye opener.
