Topic Dog Boards / Health / EBT, lump on nose now possible leukemia
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 26.12.13 17:08 UTC
My Mam has a nearly 9 year old EBT, absolute beautiful dog in everyway his temprement is amazing. Since October he has been taking himself off upstairs to bed for a lot of the day. This she put down to her spinone pup being too boisterous and not giving him peace and quiet. One day he had blood on his legs which my Mam didn't know where it had come from, I said possibly a nose bleed when she was out. Everything else seemed fine until 2 weeks ago when quite a large lump appeared on his nose when she had been out in the afternoon. My mam thought maybe he had knocked it on the marble hearth as he had been sneezing for a couple of days.
The lump hadn't gone down so he was taken to the vet on Monday, who suspected an abcess or heamatoma, she tried to drain it and did get a bit of blood out but not loads, the lump is golf ball size by now. The vet asked how he had been and my mam explained he was off colour the vet felt him and his glands in his neck and legs are up, very enlarged. She then explained that it may be leukemia and he is booked in for a biopsy on Monday.

I've been over and seen him today and my Mam said he had had a nose bleed this morning and the blood was down his legs ,  he is now making a quiet snorting noise now and again, then he went upstairs to bed out of the way.
The things I guess I'm asking for is people's opinions of this lump being linked to the possible leukemia. I feel that the lump is bad and it is worrying me, I can't see how he is going to get over this. Any advice / opinions greatly appreciated.
We are so worried :(

The symptoms sound similar to a dog I know who was diagnosed with lymphoma (he too came up in large lumps that would burst and weep horrible gunk) last November. He was put on steroid injections; at first they were weekly, then after about three months it went to every 10 days, then every fortnight ... he's now having them about every 5 or 6 weeks and is doing really well. To look at him you'd have no idea he was ill. So try not to panic just yet (easier said than done, I know).

Thank you for your reply it has helped us through the wait.

Murphy had his biopsies taken today from the chest and back leg . We find out the results on Thursday, his bloods came back showing low platelets and the vet explained this is why the bump on his nose could be very slow to heal, she still thinks it is a bump and nothing serious .

The vet also said if it was leukemia we could go down the route of chemo or steroids, and will discuss that on Thursday. Personally I don't like the thought of chemo making him ill when he is feeling poorly already, but it will be down to my Mam.

Again if anyone has any similar experiences I would like to hear them x

If it does need chemo I wouldnt rule it out. My GS bitch was on chemo for mast cell tumours over the summer and didnt show any side effects at all, in fact they deliberately err on the side of caution with quality of life being paramount. My bitch had tablets every day at home and weekly blood tests at the vet. It was only through the blood tests that it was found she couldnt continue the chemo and needed surgery (due to tumour being in very delicate area).

Hi cassis mum tahnk you for your post.

We got the results back and its not good the vet has said he may only have a month to live and offered chemo or steroids. After a quick chat she thought he wouldn't do well on chemo as he gets stressed in the vets and would have to go in to be on a drip.
She has prescribed prednisone which we are hoping will work as it seems to have helped so many other dogs whilst I have been searching the net for ideas/help.
My poor Mam is in such a state with the worry but is going to keep him comfortable and happy but will not let him suffer, he will have the best of everthything whilst he can. He has never attempted to lie on the sofa but the last two days he has sneaked up for cuddles, my Mam can't get much done as he just wants her cuddling him. Everthing can wait though as long as Murphy is happy x
