Topic Dog Boards / Health / constant sneezing

Hi I awoke at 3 am yesterday morning to find my Yorkshire Terrier (a keeper) constantly sneezing. It was literally constant. Under advice I flushed the nostrils with saline which helped slightly, the sneezing episodes went to every 15 minutes on average after the flush. This morning (sat) I took her to the Vets but once there she stopped.....  Typical!

He gave her a steroid injection and said all should be well but now it's not stoped. It has improved a little.

The only thing I think of that's changed its the cats litter box (changed from hooded to open type) so I don't know if she had smelled the litter and ingested some or the Cat used it and she's ingested dust. It also could be something different as I was asleep at the time so only guessing.

Whilst at the Vets he said she had a grade 1 or 2 murmur which shocked mecompletley out the blue! I bred her so have her mother. I have given up now and she is due to be spayed so not concerned for future lines just the heath of my babies. Of course her most immediate problem is the sneezing.

Advice appreciated

It could be an allergy so I would be tempted to give her some Piriton to see. I don't know about amounts  but if you tell us her weight someone might know.
Did they look up her nose ? She might have sniffed something up there.

I recently took one of my dogs in to the vet because she couldn't stop sneezing.  The young girl who examined my bitch said that her temp was normal, so no reason to give antibiotics.  I felt as if I had wasted my time seeing the vet.

Got out into the car park, and the sneezing was violent.  Snot flying everywhere.  I got into the car and placed the dog on my lap.  She did a huge sneeze and I saw a tiny amount of green poking out of the nostril that had been running.  Chihuahuas have pretty small nostrils and only a tiny amount of green to be seen.  I tried getting hold of it with my nails.  As I slowly pulled, I saw a grass blade emerging, about 3" long.  Huge for the size of dog.

I took the dog and piece of grass back in to the hospital and asked to see the same vet.  She immediately prescribed antibiotics.

Poor Girl Jean, good job you saw it.

I would be changing my vet if that was the attitude. There is no excuse for  not giving a dog a thorough examination. You are a paying customer, not doing them a favour!

I also had a dog that did a lot of sneezing for a while then one day he did a really big sneeze and like Jean I saw a piece of grass protruding from a nostril so I pulled it out carefully. the sneezing stopped after that.

>like Jean I saw a piece of grass protruding from a nostril

As a pure matter of interest.  If the dog eats a blade of grass and it comes down the nose, it does far less damage than a piece of grass being sniffed up the nostril, and coming back out through the nostril.

Going just one way, the blade remains smooth.  Moving backwards makes all the furry edges scratch.
