Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Dog doesn't like his bed

Hi I know there was some chat about beds a few weeks ago but can't find -just did a search and came up with the Michael Jackson thread which distracted me...
The corgi has a daytime flat padded mat on which he gnaws things/eats his treats. He can stretch out on this and seems to like it for crashing as well as playing. He gets on it when we ask him to. We also got him a much thicker bed from the petshop which he used to sleep on in his crate- I suspect it is harder to stretch on because it is much thicker but I thought it looked quite comfy myself. Now he sleeps in our room at night- this was not our initial policy but it seems to be working out ok; he is a very quiet sleeper and only has a fox induced barkathon about once a week which [most of the time] is silenced by "Quiet!". I know that dogs move around in the night but none of his moves involve sleeping on his own bed - even if he gets on it when asked it is not for very long. He will go only for the old sheepskin rug or the oriental rug which is thin. We tried putting his day mat up there but that has also been rejected.
We would quite like to localise the sleeping areas so we don't accidentally step on him or have to pick up lots of hair i.e. get him to like his bed!
Any ideas?

Hi Cissy. We have 2 corgis who sleep in our bedroom and have to say that neither stays in their beds during the night!!. However, I would hazard a guess that your corgi is finding it too warm in his bed. I know that ours perfer to sleep on the bare floorboards. But funnily enough one of the corgis will spend most of his day upstairs in his bed. Incidentally, when we first had him, he was 4 years old and his breeder/owner suggested that we bought a plastic type bed with a vet bed in it as this is what he was used to, he certainly loves his bed. Also I would not bother about stepping on him as he will soon move out of the way or learn where is the safest place is to sleep, but regarding collecting the dog hairs in one place, good luck!!

thanks anna
I am glad there are some other corgis on the Board! We've only bumped into 3 others so far out of millions of dogs and many people are really curious as to why we have one - can't escape the royal connotation at all!. He likes shopping so I took him once to Fortnum and Mason, tied him up in the lobby and came back 5 minutes later to find him surrounded by a throng of Japanese tourists taking photos, convinced that you know who must have been in there buying mince pies!

I have seen him walk away from hot areas like the fire after giving himself a nice roasting so I think you must be right about his bed. And I'm also probably forgetting just how thick his coat is and should let him choose his own comfort level.

Hi Cissy We dont have any problems re royal connections as we have Cardigan Corgis!!. As one is brindle and the other one is a brindle point tri, most people assume that they are Xbreeds.

Dear Sullysmum
You could EASILY fit in another six chihuahuas in the amount of room mine takes up when he's asleep, stretched out in dead cockroach position, paws and legs akimbo, everything on display!

Thanks for the kind words, we buried Penny today in the same place as Toby and bought a beautiful Fairy ornament for the grave.
