Topic Dog Boards / Health / Wobblers Syndrome/Slipped disc

Lottie (11 year old Dobe) collapsed earlier today on our walk. Luckily I wasn't far from home and we got home and then went to the emergency vet who administered a painkilling injection along with an anti-inflammatory. We were sent home with Diazepam and have an appointment tomorrow afternoon for a possible x-ray (she'll have a pre-anaesthetic heart scan as she has a murmur). The vet is thinking a slipped disc. I'm wondering about Wobblers. Her back end has been getting a bit weaker, which I mentioned to the vet on our last visit, but I put that down to her age although she was running about happily yesterday. I've just tried to get her out for a wee but she can't use her back legs at all now (before she could although was stumbling). About to contact emergency vet again...

How worrying for you Karen :(

Hopefully the xray will give you some answers. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is manageable whatever it is x

I took her back in and she had the heart scan while I was there, which was OK. Now awaiting blood results and the x-ray results. Worried sick as it doesn't sound good. If she needs spinal surgery I won't put her through it.

It is difficult not to think the worst isn't it - been there myself too many times to count! Will the vet be phoning you with the results this evening? We were referred to Davies for an MRI scan when Talli had suspected herniated discs (he did, and went on to make a full recovery following a three month rehabilitation regime, but it was his neck and front end that were affected due to the location of the affected discs).

She did phone a little while ago and the initial x-ray was OK so they are going to do a more detailed x-ray (putting dye into/around the spinal cord?) and will phone me later. Another thought is she may have suffered an ischemic (sp?) attack of some sort (stroke), which offers a better prognosis. Will post when I get more news...

Fingers & paws crossed for you both. Good luck.

Oh I am so sorry.  I am sending positive vibes.  I do hope that there is something that can be done for her.
- By Pedlee Date 16.06.13 21:38 UTC
It looks like a prolapsed disc. :( They are going to keep her in overnight and get the head vet to have a look at the x-rays in the morning and see how Lottie is doing after the anaesthetic has worn off. It doesn't sound good and I won't go the surgical route so there aren't really many options.

So sorry to hear this.  I'll have you in my thoughts tomorrow.

She's had a comfortable night and I'm going to see her at around 10.30am. She's still very sleepy and drugged up and the head vet feels she would need to refer her to a specialist if I wanted to go the surgical route (which I don't want to do) as it may be Wobblers AND a prolapsed disc. The surgery carries significant risk and I don't think it would be fair to put her through it - she's such an active, playful dog. She said we can try cage rest and pain medication for a while and see how it goes, so I'll see how she is when I visit, see if she'll eat and pee/poo and make a decision then...

Sorry to see you lost your girl. You made a very tough decision but I would have made the same one. I have,a daft 2 year old dobe myself and know how soft they really are.

Oh no Karen, so sorry to hear this x Our previous male was pts in similar circumstances. He too went completely off his back legs one day and was 11 like Lottie. He collapsed in the garden and there was just no response from any of his legs at all when the vet came out. Major spinal surgery is just not a fair option for a Dobe of that age is it.

Run free Lottie x

I am in tears here over a dog I've never met.  My loving Beardie girl's legs went, and I had to love her enough.

I am so very sorry for your loss, and understand your grief.

RIP sweet Lottie.
