Hi all, I hope I'm being over paranoid but I just wanted some quick advice. My basset hound has come back from being mated a few days ago and anyone with a basset knows they have to be lifted in and out of cars and baths etc. I just wanted to know obviously I had to pick her up to put her in the car but could I have caused any harm to the puppies if she did catch pregnant or could she absorb them??? I as always liftted her by putting one hand under her chest bone and one hand under her back legs to shelter the pressure from her stomach. Hopefully I'm being over paranoid but I would like to know either way.

I think you picked her up in the most suitable way possible.  I would be extremely surprised for it to make any difference to conception.

I have a very tiny breed, and once took a pregnant bitch on holiday.  She jumped out of the caravan, ran to the fence, through the bars and jumped.  Unfortunately, it was at least 8 feet down to the road.  I almost had a seizure! Bitch was fine, and whelped no problems.

Chill!  :-)  :-)  :-)

Wouldn't make any difference to conception.

My Cassie was jumping 5 ft fencing on the day of ( and after ) delivering 10 puppies. This was not encouraged but she always took pregnancy in her stride !

In my first litter, my bitch scrambled over a wall in our garden and there was a ditch the other side and I was really worried until the end of the pregnancy as I had read about no trauma etc but all was fine. I almost had a seizure too. Where we lived she could no go anywhere because then it was a fence the other side. I had to climb over and lift her up to the wall and guide her back over, It was a nightmare.
I can't imagine you gently lifting her could be a problem.

I guessed it would be ok but I just worried about harming her and stopping anything that might be going on in side her. Thanks for getting back to me!
