Topic Dog Boards / Health / Using thornit on paws?
- By HuskyGal Date 12.01.13 23:36 UTC
Just realised in 7 yrs I've never had occasion to use Thornit on Storm ( have it in the Med kit for when I used to clear the Eurasier's ears )

He's a typical Husky and likes to look after his feet, curling in bed and treating himself to a nibbling pedicure (usually when I'm trying to sleep!)

He's been paying one particular paw more attention today and in my process of elimination of what could be in/wrong with the paw, there does appear to be slight evidence in one ear of mites.

So, I'm conversant with using Thornit in ears but have never used it on paws...
I'm safe to assume am I that as Thornit advise a technique of putting paw into a bag containing their powder that it's ok if the dog subsequently licks it??

Anyone that uses Thornit on paws got any tips? Do you leave it once powdered, is it ok if it gets licked? Do you cover the paw after dosing????

Any tips gratefully received!

Oh and I put some into a freezer bag and put paw in and rub well into it, I don't then cover it and they don't tend to lick it but no issues if they do x

It's gone oh so quiet out there, cold and nothingness!!! I'm not saying anything more about the subject, as I've already mentioned it just won't happen otherwise :-(

Can I butt in on Liv's thread (sorry Liv!) and ask if anyone has used it for yeasty paws. My Papillons and Cavalier have all got red stained yeasty smelling/looking paws, simply because of all the wet weather we've had. It does not look nice but it doesn't seem to bother them. It's quite obvious it is yeast as the paws hardly ever get a chance to dry out. I'm in the process of cutting all the fur off from between the pads to help them keep dryer, and have used Malaseb shampoo on their paws when bathing, but would Thornit help as well? Thankfully the worst affected ones are not show dogs but I'm worried the ones I show shall get badly stained -a mainly white dog with brown paws do not look very good, especially not if it isn't brown anywhere else........!

I have never covered georges paws but keep him off the carpeted areas as I think it can stain them black with the iodine in it.

Yes i have used it on paws and nibbling doesnt seem to cause a problem if thy ingest small amounts of thornit.Just to say to say I agree its amazing how much noise a nibbling dog can make as you are going to sleep !

Many years ago I telephoned Miss Betts (the lady who made Thornit) for advice on using it on paws, she told me to make sure that the dog did not lick the paws after it had been applied.

Thanks Henri ~ useful to know to future reference.
As it was I dosed his ear and not paws and he's stopped 'worrying' his paw now, it may have been there was nothing 'wrong' with his paw... Huskies can be soo fastidious with their pedicures *rolls eyes*

Many thanks everyone for the comments~ all helpful.
