If not progesterone testing it is wise to mate the bitch until she is no longer responsive, to cover all bases. Alternate days are good, but if the stud is wittering away with the bitch resident, then allowing daily matings is probably better than him getting worked up, as he won't be resting.
If your using accurate progesterone testing then mating two and four days after ovulation will certainly cover you for all fertile eggs, but if your planning on staying close by the stud owner then daily for three days would be good too. Of course the dogs don't read the books, and some dogs and bitches will only mate for a limited time and others will happily do so for extended periods regardless of the fertile period.
