Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Mating - how many ties

My girl has finally come into season so is due to be mated next weekend providing her progesterone tests give the right results during the week

My question is how times do you usually allow the dogs to tie?

With her mother she stayed with the stud dog for her first litter and I understand enjoyed herself quite a lot :/ her second litter because of distance she had 3 ties, one each day for 3 days

Due to distance, transport challenges and circumstances I am wondering whether to visit the dog each day or allow one tie and then go back with a day between the visits for a second mating, always assuming my girl is receptive

Any or all of the above are fine.

If not progesterone testing it is wise to mate the bitch until she is no longer responsive, to cover all bases.  Alternate days are good, but if the stud is wittering away with the bitch resident, then allowing daily matings is probably better than him getting worked up, as he won't be resting.

If your using accurate progesterone testing then mating two and four days after ovulation will certainly cover you for all fertile eggs, but if your planning on staying close by the stud owner then daily for three days would be good too.  Of course the dogs don't read the books, and some dogs and bitches will only mate for a limited time and others will happily do so for extended periods regardless of the fertile period.

Even when I have gone to stay near the stud owner I do 2 matings with a day off between, as the sperm from the first mating is still viable so no point in adding to it. Other breeders in my breed only do one mating when travelling to a stud and get pups.

I am travelling to Holland for my next mating and will plan to arrive the day my girlie is ovulationg (If the bloods are to be trusted) we will mate her every other day as long as she is willing.

That is what I did travelling to USA and previously Finland, as you needed to book flights as soon as the bitch came in season you had to guess at a day and go with that, once there not much point doing progesterone tests, (unless they had been unresponsive).
