Topic Other Boards / Foo / Spring flower name help, please
- By ridgielover Date 21.05.12 15:40 UTC
I need a couple of names for the newest members of my Dexter cattle herd. I like to use seasonal flower names. The calves were born at the end of April and I'm running out of time to register them but I can't seem to think of any names that I like.

I've already used: Daffodil, Primrose, Snowdrop, Camellia, and one's mother is called Bluebell.

Any suggestions gratefully received :)

Tulip?

Or to vary it a bit Echo - from Narcissi (the mini daffs) made me think of Narcissus and so to Echo

Oops - I've already had a Tulip too. And a dandelion (can't believe we've had so many of those flowering already!).

Will consider the Narcissi tho', quite like that :)

Tulip
Petunia
Daisy
Freesia (sp)
- By ridgielover Date 21.05.12 15:52 UTC
Had a Tulip, a Daisy and a Freesia but don't think I've used Petunia. Isn't that a bit more summery though? The calves were born in April so looking for spring names. But I'll save Petunia for a later born heifer :)

You must have had a Buttercup     ...haven't you :)  Oh and Cowslip

How about the trees that are in blossom too - Apple, Cherry, and Magnolia
- By ridgielover Date 21.05.12 15:57 UTC
One of my cows is called Buttercup. I've used Blossom as a name. Quite like Magnolia - must check to see that I haven't already used that. I do know all my cows by name but I've sold quite a few cows with calves so haven't had time to remember all the names I've used for those ...

Clover?   Honeysuckle? (or even Eglantine!) Crocus? Celandine?
- By ridgielover Date 21.05.12 19:53 UTC
I'll have to keep the bull away from them so they don't calve in the spring :)
- By Chatsworth [gb] Date 21.05.12 20:00 UTC
You only need to move the names.....not the actual calving.

I think that might be going a step too far :-)

On my walk today in the sunshine I saw many flowers already mentioned, but also many lesser pasture flowers.
Speedwell
Eyebright
Archangel
Periwinkle
Pennycress
and some grasses I couldn't put a name to, but looking in my book they have names like Melick, Fescue, Timothy, Catstail, Cocksfoot, Galingale, Marram and Reedmace.

And don't forget Ramsons and Solomons Seal, both plants that grow alongside bluebells in ancient woodland. There will be Meadowsweet, Agrimony, Melilot, Restharrow, Hawksbeard, Knapweed and Yarrow later on.

When you run out of native herbs, try looking at the common names of butterflies and moths, they have come very colourful and unique names :)

I'm not much of a gardener but could you consider using a variety of some of the plant names you're already used.  I've found this site for tulips which looks as though you may get some ideas from;-
