
What about something with a front ring on it (like a halti harness, but better designed!)? That way with a double ended lead you could use the back ring most of the time, then the front ring when he falls behind - the pressure then would be gentle and from the front centre, rather than pulling forwards over his back.
I used the halti harness on Tia when she was first here - she didn't have any injury as serious as your boy's but she did have neck damage after 10 years of serious pulling on a collar and hitting the end of a flexi (due to being owned by my idiot brother), and encouraging her on a normal harness did cause pain - so I used the front ring on the halti to bring her forward in a better way. Worked well for her.
The only trouble with the haltis is that it's a good design IMO - but very poorly executed so it would be worth looking at other harnesses with front rings (I think Extra Dog have one now with thick fleece padding), if that's a viable idea for him.
