Topic Dog Boards / Health / Harness for long dog?

Any recommendations for a harness that is suitable for a dog with a long back & neck with short legs. I have tried some and even ordered a Walkese but as with others it pulls up behind his front legs when walking beside or behind me. At the moment he wears a martingale but after problems with his spine would like to find a harness to take any pressure off his neck - suggestions please?

how about the perfect fit harness from these guys http://dog-games-shop.co.uk/perfect-fit-fleece-dog-harness They come in 3 different bits so you can get a better fit.

Claire. Thank you, initially looking at the site thought we're going to have the same problem. Not having straight front legs the band around his middle gets caught up in the 'arm pits', but have spoken to them they have been really helpful.  They will allow us to try various combinations and even then if he won't tolerate it, will offer a full refund. Unfortunately harness are designed for those that pull out front but not bringing up the rear.

I use a Lupine one for my dachsies with no problem but they are never trailing behind as they are keen to get to where we are going.

They have 2 types now and their life time guarantee does work as one of the girls chewed through the others harness when crated together on a trip away from home, they exchanged it for a new one no bother.

how about something like this https://www.canix.co.uk/shop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=379 its the harnesses we use for cani-cross and bikejoring, they are obviously designed for dogs who pull ahead but wonder if it would work ? or this one https://www.canix.co.uk/shop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=470

Rhodach. Most of the time when walking on lead he has bounced alongside but yes he can trail behind when he finds a good smell. Have always been gentle in encouraging him on but since his slipped disc, am very aware that I would prefer not to 'guide' him when needed from his neck & yes he has trailed behind recently when uncomfortable but I'm told to gradually encourage him to increase his walks.

What about something with a front ring on it (like a halti harness, but better designed!)?  That way with a double ended lead you could use the back ring most of the time, then the front ring when he falls behind - the pressure then would be gentle and from the front centre, rather than pulling forwards over his back.

I used the halti harness on Tia when she was first here - she didn't have any injury as serious as your boy's but she did have neck damage after 10 years of serious pulling on a collar and hitting the end of a flexi (due to being owned by my idiot brother), and encouraging her on a normal harness did cause pain - so I used the front ring on the halti to bring her forward in a better way.  Worked well for her.

The only trouble with the haltis is that it's a good design IMO - but very poorly executed so it would be worth looking at other harnesses with front rings (I think Extra Dog have one now with thick fleece padding), if that's a viable idea for him.

Another vote for dog-games harnesses. My cavs and chins all use these and Sally who owns this company is very helpful. They wash well and offer a comfy snug fit.At most agility shows about half the dogs there will be wearing one of these harnesses
