Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Small bite kibble?
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 16.08.11 14:47 UTC
My picky princess is at it again! She's been fairly happily eating Wainwright puppy kibble mixed 50/50 with beef mince / grated cheese / tuna flakes for a few months, though she's still pretty lean. Then I suddenly realised she's 13 months old and ought to be moved onto adult food, so she had a few weeks with part puppy kibble, part JWB adult, which is what the other dogs eat, and she seemed fine. Then last week she finished up the puppy kibble so was just eating JWB adult 50/50 with the yummy stuff. And she won't touch it - won't even pick out the meat / cheese / tuna! I went to PAH yesterday and got some Wainwrights adult, reasoning that as she hadn't liked JWB puppy, she perhaps didn't like the adult either. But the kibble pieces are huge relative to the puppy kibble or the JWB kibble and she wouldn't touch that either.

In despair I got her to eat the next night's portion of beef mince by itself, and the others finished her supper off. She seemed interested in a piece of kibble that was left undiscovered and ate that, and I then got her to eat a reasonable amount of both JWB and Wainwrights kibble without anything else, just because the other two dogs were sitting there looking hopeful and she decided she'd better eat it before they did. I can't however feed her like this every night, I need some kibble she will condescend to eat without me having to go through such a ridiculous song & dance.

I know RC do small dog kibble but it's twice as many as Wainwrights, and I can't persuade my stupid computer to bring up any sensible search results to see if Wainwrights do a small kibble; there wasn't anything in PAH. Does anyone know? Or can someone suggest a reasonably priced small kibble that my neurotic little miss might like? She has also just come into season, but I don't know if that's got anything to do with suddenly refusing food as she's perfectly happy to eat treats etc! I'm considering going back to Bakers which was the only thing she was mildly interested in - not keen, but kind of interested. I know everyone says it's like eating McDonalds every day, but that's better than not eating at all! And she won't touch any of the wet foods or raw foods either, we've been through all of those.

Splash out Lucy! She hardly eats a lot so buy a bag of RC Sensible.

Then play 'catch the kibble', "watch" - chuck it then repeat.

Tried that - she used to eat if I made it a fun training session, but she isn't fooled by that any more. What's sensible? I've seen the small dog stuff, and I know they have a bunch of breed specific, but I've not heard of sensible.

CSJ do plenty of small bite stuff and will send out sample bags for you to try (and measure!)

Fish4Dogs do small bite too but are more expensive - I'm not sure if they send samples but they are at plenty of shows which you could visit (and take her for a taste test :) )

ps also forgot to mention she didn't like the RC Junior, so am not convinced she will go for the adult.....

Have you tried Orijen or Tast of the Wild? Both fairly small kibble?
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 16.08.11 15:39 UTC
Thanks both, not tried any of those, will nip to PAH on the way home. Not even sure if it's the size or the taste she objects to, she's so weird! But anything's worth a try, I am at my wits end again, she is just so skinny! :-)

If she's still too skinny, why don't you just go back to what worked -no need to change her to adult. :)

That's probably the next plan. I wasn't sure if there was a reason she ought to change to adult, presumably puppy gives too much protein for a dog which should have finished growing? Anyway, PAH didn't have any of those, so I've got some IAMS small bite and something called 'Hi Life' complete moist. She seems to be enjoying the Hi Life so far.....

Wainwrights do a small bite in turkey and rice kibble for small dogs.
Its on their website.

Just had a quick check for you and its in 2kg and 7.5kg sizes and the protein is 26%.
Only in turkey and rice flavour.

Great, thanks very much! I couldn't persuade my computer to open their website, it's been playing up a lot lately.

I would go back to what you were feeding her originally if she was happy with it.  It wont do her any harm and at least you wont have to worry about her.  I feed the fish4dogs small kibble to one of mine and they will send you a sample if you wanted to try something new and thats available online for convenience.  best of luck!

i have a fussy toy poodle who will eat the natures menu tins and also i buy Arden grange mini lamb and rice which is a very small kibble which I fill kongs with so he can have a bit of crunch after the natures menu as he won't eat it mixed together. I used to buy Royal canin mini sensible but when AG introduced their mini lamb and rice changed over as i had heard such good reports on here about it from other dog owners. I have also tried all the other good quality wet foods eg nature diet wainwrights etc but he definitely prefers the natures menu but only the tins not the pouches.

She wasn't exactly happy, but would generally eat it if mixed 50/50 with mince / cheese / tuna flakes. She is mucking about with the Hi Life tonight, admittedly I did put a dozen pieces of the Iams small kibble in the bottom, but I do wish I could train hubby to stop playing up to her! He's now sitting with her trying to persuade her to eat, I keep telling him it only makes her sillier.

I wouldn't feed IAMs as many folk who have fed it to their cats and dogs they have gone hyper, jumping off the walls, returned to normal when that food was stopped.

Fish4dogs has small kibble in normal fish or salmon flavours to chose from and they do send out samples when asked, my lot went off RC which was much dearer and you had to buy 2 sacks at a time, F4D's has free  delivery no matter what size the order.

She's not a big fish eater, unlike her namesake. She didn't want either IAMS or Hi Life last night, I persuaded her to eat some in the end but we had a nasty upset stomach overnight so that's gone in the bin! Back to Wainwright Puppy for now, I think!
