Topic Dog Boards / Health / 3 weeks old not seen poo!
- By kodisbabe [gb] Date 25.07.11 09:29 UTC
Hi,
After loosing my little boy I'm now overly worrying about the two girls.
I wormed them all on panacur, for 3 consecutive days on Friday (they would have been 22 days old on first day) well since my boy died early sunday morning I've kept a strict eye on the girls and haven't seen them poo (I was in there quite a bit yesterday and I didn't see them go once) well one of them crys after feeding (from mum) and then seems to strain without anything coming out, but they wee quite a bit (mostly on the paper). I have given them a little bit of sugary water this morn. I have tried the wet cloth and massaging and putting their bums in warm water.

They are both putting on weight well, not as well as they were but they are running around a lot now and so they will loose a little from that, main thing is they aren't loosing weight (just not putting on 130-200g a day like they were).
They are happy, lively, eating well and biting like mad (off subject but when can they have toys?).

Could it be that mum is cleaning up well when I'm not there? Although mum out for 2 hours in for an hour then I feed and I get mum back in to see if they want milk too, I do this all through the day then from 9pm-8/9am mums in there the whole time.

Am I worrying for nothing or should I try and give them virgin oil (into anus or orally?)

Thanks in advance

I expect pups until they reach 12 weeks to put on weight at an increased rate.

When weight gain levels off it shows me they need to be on solids as Mum hasn't enough milk to keep pace.

When worming I do find their appetites can reduce for the second and third day, but within 24 hours of last dose whey are back to being piggy.

This is why I like to start my pups on solids before I worm.

As I worm the bitch through the last weeks of pregnancy I start pups on solids at 18 days and  start the worming at 21 days, ensuring they are wormed after a feed.

I have never had constipation after worming, rather the reverse if anything.

Constipation can occur if there is a heavy worm burden causing a blockage, but Panacur normally dissolves the worms.  I have seen whole worms passed in a very wormy rescue litter, in fact pups were pot bellied and anaemic.

I had started them on solids I try them 4 times a day on royal canin mother and starter mixed with warm water a mushed up. They seem to like the juice more than the biscuits though, and wipe it on me lol. When I wormed them I made sure they had eaten some of this and then they suckled a little off mum before I actually gave them the wormer, so they had full belly's.  But they haven't (that I have seen) poo'ed since. Their belly's are HUGE but not hard.
The mum was wormed from day 42 to 2 days past whelping.

They are now 25 days old and weigh:
2797g
2523g

They are maybe still at the stage where they need Mum to stimulate them to poo rather than going spontaneously, as she still has lots of access to them you are not seeing it.

In view of the death of the male pup I would get the vet to give them the once over, listen to their bowel sounds and taking their temp usually produces a result.

I worm Mum at the same time as the pups to stop her reinfecting them through her milk.

Ok didn't think of that, should I do her 3 days or just a one off?

Just follow the normal adult dosage of what ever you are using for Mum.

Mum is also on panacur, but by worming mum will that not overdose the puppies as they have just finished their 3 day course of panacur?

Thanks

I didn't have a problem when I used the Panacur 10% for Mum and pups and it was recommended by my mentor who had been doing it for years.
