Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Vaccinated at 7 weeks 4 days - 2nd jab 14 days later?
- By Ghost [gb] Date 19.05.11 18:41 UTC
Hi all - had my pups vaccinates 14 days ago at 7 weeks 4 days old - it says to wait 14 days till next jab - which is tomorrow-but vet will not do it until they are 10 weeks old - on Monday - just wondered if any one knew why it had to be at 10 weeks rather than 9 weeks 4 days ?? ! !
We are going away for a few days 10 days afterward so if I could get thm done tomorrow 14 days after the first it would mean they would be completely safe - but waiting till Monday will mean taking pens, tarpaulins, parvo virucide killer and no floor touching!

because the final jab is not licensed/proven to provide immunity before 10 weeks of age.

The reason two jabs are given is that the first is very likely to be negated by maternal antibodies, but will cover pups whose maternal antibody levels have dropped off sooner.

I and others prefer to wait for second vaccination at 12 weeks to be even more sure that the vaccine will take, if the maternal antibodies are still too high you risk the puppy being unprotected or poorly protected until it has a booster a year later.

Thats fine - now I know the reason I shall wait until the Monday and take all my precautions for a  'Ground' free weekend !

Hi
Just wondered - I have owned and bred dogs with I guess at least 3 different vets, without fail I have been advised to wait a week after 2nd jab before taking the puppy out. I have 8 & 10 so puppy can't go out and socialise until 11. Does everyone have that advice as I have a breed where early socialisation is very important. The earlier the better.

Just to further confuse things at my Vets Practice 1st at 8-10 weeks with 2nd at 12 weeks. 'Safe' to go out and about 13 weeks. In addition they give another at 18 weeks. This vaccination schedule differed from another vets in my town which was similar to 'Hazenaides'.

I have just had a pup vaccinated at 8 weeks and vet wants to do 2nd at 12 weeks and then another week before going out. My daughter has a pup a month older. She had hers vaccinated at 8 weeks with 2nd one at 10 weeks and then wait another week.
I am not sure why there is such a difference.

Vaccination Schedules do seem to differ slightly depending on the vets used. However please refer to post by Brainless. When the natural immunity given by the pups mother starts to fade the vaccinations then provide that protection.

My vet point blankly refuses to give first vaccination before 8 weeks, not even a day, second at 10 weeks (not before) then they can go out a week later.

It is wise to follow the advice of your vet who will have in mind the local risks and the vaccine manufacturers recommendations etc, but you can still undertake plenty early socialisation with pup safely tucked under arm. I carried my large breed pup around for a couple of weeks in safe environments including a pet shop, on the local streets, in the car, to visit the vet receptionist, around the local park at a quiet time, past the shops, sitting at the bus stop, to a friend's house... just don't let your pup meet dogs you don't know, don't let your pup down in places visited by lots of other dogs, be sensible and all the early and safe world observing will pay off in the long run.

My vet does first after 8 weeks and second 3 weeks then out a week after that . For brooke that means she will be 13 weeks and 6 days m I was hoping to manage a bit earlier but no so most if the early socialisation will be in my arms

Diane, garden centres are a godsend in this regard, they are generally busy with people and interesting sights and sounds and they don't mind you carrying a puppy in store.  Also if you do need to put the pup down for a few minutes you can be pretty sure you are in a dog free area

I had a heavy puppy that I simply couldn't lug around very easily so I put some fleece in the bottom of the trolley and took him for bone shaking rides around the car park to watch traffic and get used the noise, and then we'd spin around the shop charming old ladies and eating christmas decorations!!  After school the mums call in for ice creams etc so you'll get kids too - we had the Santa's Grotto crowd when we were doing this

(If I lived in a town I must confess that I might have borrowed a shopping trolley - as it's so much easier than all that heavy lifting!!)

For various reasons, during the past 3 years I've had 3 vets, and they have all said exactly this. Having said that, I take my pups out a week after first vaccination, never wait until the second. We go to the field we use, no other dogs there, and go to training classes to sit on lap or in cage, not meeting other dogs nose to nose but meeting people.

We do need to put things in perspective.

Our children are vaccinated at 3, 4, and 5 months (well that is what it was when my youngest was a baby and it was 3, 6 and 9 months with the eldest).

We don't keep our babies away from people until they are fully vaccianted, though of course we would nto take them somewhere if we knew there was illness around.

we keep our kids away from relatives when there is an outbreak of measles Mumps etc, we get letters home from schools if there is an outbreak fo anything contagious.

Puppies under 13 weeks should not be getting much in the way of lead walking anyway, trips away from home are about socialisation, which can be done perfectly well by avoiding high risk areas, meeting lots of people and things, and dogs whose health status is known.

If like most breeders you have other dogs then they are not being kept in Quarantine until the pups vaccinations are complete (certainly don't confine all mine when we have puppies, though avoid the parks, and stick to road walking).

Thanks for the garden centre idea for socialization, I have a carrier which fitted 3 pups up to 12 weeks[one went to her new home then]we did me walking around locally,up to the shops and around PAH, did try B&Q but was asked to leave, did try expaining why I was doing it but it fell on deaf ears.

Any new suggestions are always welcome.

I got my girl yesterday at 8 weeks old, she had her first vaccination today and I then took her to the garden centre and carried her about, thankfully she's not too heavy. I have with the Bernese put them in trollies too, brilliant way.
Her next vaccination is at 10 weeks. In the next 2 weeks she will be out and about meeting people and dogs I know are ok in their back gardens, she'll be experiencing different situations too, i'm not waiting until 10 weeks to get her out there, for me that will be far too late. However she won't be taken to places where lots of dogs go, that would just be silly!!
