my dog mated a bitch this week and they had quite a long tie, the owner of the bitch says she was slightly up and over but my dog seemed to manage ok but he is a big boy in that department , anyway as i said the tie was quite long and after the owner of the bitch was slightly worried as said that they hoped that the bitch wouldnt need a cesarean(dont think ive spelt that right) as maybe she must be small inside
would this be right? how can she tell at this early stage their not small dogs as they are gundogs?

What do you class as a long tie? Some can be 20 minutes and others an hour.

I doubt that because of a long tie she will need a cesarean, you need to look at the bitches lines, so did her mum grand mothers or great grandmothers need cesareans? If they did then she would have a much higher chance of needing one.

I'm not an expert but I don't think the length of tie has anything to do with the size of the uterine horns or anything like that. I have been told it is a sign that the bitch was nearing the end of the fertile time, but that could be an old wives tale.

that is what I have always heard and it would appear to have some truth as the longest ties my girls have had have been on their last matings and often they were already nto that keen.

in my opinion the length of the tie is determined by the dog as its the swelling of the bulbus gland that holds him in the bitch (i know the bitches muscles grip also) but one of my boys has mated 5 different bitches and all his ties are 18 mintues, he is like clockwork!  They can only part once the males gland decreases in size to allow them to part and then his penis will be back down and away (sorry) within a minute or two max so for me i feel it is totally the dog and i dont feel it has anything at all to do with a bitches capability of whelping naturally. 1st mating my bitch had tie of 1 1/2 hours, after progesterone testing. Stud dog owner would not allow another mating (we did not agree with this, as we know it is not the length of tie that counts, anyway that is 'water under the bridge' so to speak). Bitch scanned for one puppy, had one puppy by caesarean on day 66. Sadly lost puppy after 3 days.

Mated bitch again with different dog, did not test as we stayed at dogs house for a week (travelled long distance) they had one mating and 20 minute tie resulting in 7 healthy puppies.

Just my experience.

If that was the case then the chances are if you had a husband who was well endowed you might need a caesarian! lol Doesn't work that way at all.

The number of puppies depends on the number of eggs released that are inseminated and assuming the dog is fertile. The tie is nothing to do with how many pups or if a caesarian will be needed at all.

If you have only one or two puppies developing then the bitch would not look as big, as if carrying a full litter, then you should scan the bitch as often a singleton puppy will not stimulate the bitch sufficiently for it to be born, so often an owner might decide to choose to have a caesarian or may end up having one as the bitch takes too long to deliver the puppy. If the bitch is left too long the puppy may be born dead or die shortly after. I learnt this when one bitch I had produced a singleton puppy both times she was mated, my vet advised me that it was probably a one off after the first time but when it happened a second time I chose to have the caesarian rather than risk losing the puppy.

exactly the same here....only even with the c-section puppy was still born :(  Needless to say she is spayed.

Ties ensure that the dog has delivered sperm.....not relevant to anything else at all.
My girl had a very quick and calm mating with a good 30 mins tie....No puppies....gutted as we had this litter with this ch male planned for a while...whoever said breeding was easy eh!
