What's better for a pet miniature schnauzer being stripped or clipped?
Can someone help please.

Stripping is better for the look of the dog, and you get the proper harsh weatherproof coat. But I groom one that before they came to me had been clipped so I carry on clipping her and she looks fine like that. You may find the coat loses its harsh weatherproofing, but if she's not being shown and if perhaps she has a little coat if her clipped coat absorbs rain more, she should be fine. I do enjoy handstripping and it looks much more natural and blends into the skirt so much more nicely, but sometimes even if the dog has always been stripped they really just don't like it, and if that's the case it seems a shame to insist if you aren't showing. The dog doesn't care if they have the correct coat or not after all!

It would care if it got wet and cold everytime it went out rather than had a good weatherproof coat that it was bred with. :(  And course coated dogs that have been previously clipped can have their coats recovered in most cases with correct handling.  Unfortunately this is rarely taught to groomers these days. :(

I would always recommend hand stripping for pet dogs as the coat is easier for the owner to deal with - the dog doesn't come back from a walk looking like a compost heap as a soft coat attracts dirt and debris.  I would only consider clipping a course coated dog if it was old, infirm or was particularly adversly affected by neutering.  Most neutered coats, even if they can't be completely hand stripped, can be handled better than clipping with a little stripping and thinning scissors.

Hence my suggestion that a clipped dog may need a coat for wet weather. I prefer a handstripped coat myself, but not strongly enough if the dog doesn't like the process.

I have gundogs which I handstrip.  Once I decided to stop showing my old bitch, I clipped her coat at the next grooming session.  What a mistake!  It made her feel horrible and sharp when snuggling on the couch, unlike her softer, natural coat she had when hand stripped so although it took about 6 months of hard work, I now have her coat back and handstrip everytime.  My dogs like getting groomed and usually fall asleep while I look like a yeti!
