I need to buy some more pillows - the old ones are becoming lumpy and uncomfortable - but I don't know which sort to go for. I find feather pillows more comfortable and longer-lasting than fibre ones, which tend to flatten then break up when you try to 'fluff' them, but I can't seem to find any at a reasonable price. Ideas?

I bought some overstuffed ones from Argos which I absolutely love - I have one of those on top with a normal feather one underneath.

They must have been reasonably priced or I wouldn't have bought them!!

> lumpy and uncomfortable

Mine do that as soon as i stick them in the wash.
I did some research and purchased a lovely feather pillow from M&S for £50, lovely pillow but after washing it, well its not the same and a real waste of money..
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as I need new ones which can be washed and stay in shape..

I find that feathers are the only pillows that are comfortable and last. I use cheap pillows for guests and throw them away when they go lumpy :) :) :)

down feather for me. I get them dry cleaned when required, you can also top up filling then if required.

I recently bought new sheets from the 'house of fraser' online, brilliant!
I only like bargains so bought the sale ones that are great quality at low prices, so would certainly trawl again for pillows.
I like a thick down pillow the others here prefer newer synthetic materiels.
Karen :)

eta....not that bothered about cleaning them............none of us dribble

I had a memory foam one and it was hard and the worst I've ever had, never going there again!

I have down ones on the top, and have had to put  aslightly firmer poly something from Debenhams on the bottom (the blurb said it was closeset thing to goose down)  The "fake" one is  a bit firmer, as my physio said one of my neck problems coudl be related to the height difference between where my shoulder was resting and my neck position, and I needed to increase the height slightly, so go for a  plly filling which is slightly firmer than the down one.  I was lucky in having won some Debenhams voucher, so got the poly ones from there, got the Down ones from M&S in the January sale (online) when I got my discount vouchers - I think lots of sales are still on now, so may be a good time to get out looking, either in person or online.  My personal preference for quality everyday bedlinen is John Lewis or M& S.  I have a friend who has just got a silk filled Duvet and pillows and she says they are fantastic, so might be worth looking at - they were advertised in a homestyle type magazine, sorry don't have the details.

M&S, John Lewis or Debenhams do really good feather pillows I think M&S and Debenhams still have their sale on, might be worth looking on line.

£6 from Marks and Sparks for Duck feather! Seems like a bargain, I wonder if they are sparse on their stuffing though? JG I walk past an M&S Home store on my way to work... I'll have a grope test and report back :O)

(Is there any difference between Goose and Duck? I have Goose down ones that need replacing, but they are so expensive)

This is what I purchased. States on label it can go in washing machine.. Might just take it to laundrette to be washed to see if their dryers work any better..

I wash my feather pillows on a normal 40 degree wash. then put them on low in the tumble dryer!!!
My oldest pillows are from my child hood :o and very sparce, the newest ones are what my partner bought with him, they were not that expensive from 'Dunelm mill'
I hate fibre pillow and will always go for duck feather pillows :)

I love feather pillows, nothing else seems as comfy or to last as long. Please make sure though that your feather pillows are made in the EU, preferably in the UK, so you know that the bird was dead before being plucked!

That has just put me off feather pillows for life.

Dunelm do some feather ones at reasonable prices or have a look in TK Maxx as they often have them too - I got my feather & down duvet from TK Maxx - bargain and machine washable too :-D. Debenhams Blue cross sale is on so might be worth a visit too.

This has been an on-going search for me since we stayed in a hotel in Berlin several years ago.  It was not a posh hotel - more of a business type but the pillows and duvet were the best ever.  The pillows were the continental square type and I did a search for the make.  They are only available for the hotel trade it seems.  They were feather and down I think.  We trawled though the shops when we were over there again and the good pillows were so expensive it was too much of a risk to buy it and find it didn't suit.

My neck gets so uncomfortable these days - have tried memory foam and really don't like it at all.  I think my pillows were M and S (like the ones you can wash) but they have lost all their body now.  We have a few pillows that have been passed off to the guest beds that neither of us liked.  Wish I could find a comfortable type.  Sorry JG not much help am I!  If you find one that you can recommend come back to tell us please.

I've found when sleeping in beds other than my own, that having no pillows is often better :) :)

I swear by the spring type ones I found at Dreams - about £25 each, but so comfortable, firm but springy, as they are actually sprung mattress type thingies but in a pillow instead. Only had for 6 months so far but no sign of going thin and pathetic like normal pillows always do.

I prefer feather and down definitely, but after suffering for some weeks now with a 'dodgy' shoulder, I've had to resort to a memory foam ergonomic job.  Fairly sure it helps with the shoulder, and keeps me straighter and more aligned, but it's definitely not as snuggly as a normal pillow.

Feathers for me too.  I have a firm one on the bottom and a soft one on the top.  Perfect.  The make I have are Fogarty and I stocked up a few years ago (I had a very good bargain) and I'm just on the last four.  I'm hoping the quality is as good as it used to be when the time comes to replace them.

When you wash them put one of those hard washing ball thingummies in with them (or anything that will bounce around) and it will keep the feathers separated.
