Does anyone remember the bunk beds with springs in?  The ones that would strip you bald if you sat up on the bottom bunk, suspending you by the hair until you could tug it out or your sister 'rescued' you with a pair of scissors and a murderous grin?

My sister and I were reminiscing recently about these instruments of torture and recalling how our brother was banned from the bottom bunk for pinging us out of the top by pushing up with his feet...

Anyhoo my daughter thinks that we have a) just made it up, or b) must have faulty memories and or were drunk we were at primary school so I think not! We certainly had them in the 60's and 70's but can anyone tell me when they discontinued?  They are all wooden slats now and I see that there are moves afoot to ban those too for under 12's  Also if you could point me in the direction of a photograph showing the spring things I'd be very grateful.

Whilst having this memory tour of our childhood we also remembered some odd table condiment called Atrixo/Ataxo/Atora or somesuch.  My Aunt and Uncle had this at every meal and I think it was a savoury seasoning salt and pepper combo.  Well no one else ever admits to knowing what this was and this is my next challenge.  What was that stuff.... ?

Atora is suet :)

Atora is Suet, still available
Atrixo is hand cream
Trix was white solid Lard (think it is still available.

and the other, I cannot remember the name, was a savoury meat tenderiser, contained, salt, pepper and other savoury 'bit'.. shaken onto meat before cooking... came in similar packaging as pepper.. I think Swartzkoff (sp) made it..

SAXA was a well known brand of salt, but it did mixed herbs and spices in little containers too.
Perhaps it was one of these?

The springs were also used in normal beds too, they used to fold them up to move the bed...the springs frame
was metal and the sides could be wooden etc.
I don't know what the type of frames were called but I do remember them :)

Aromat?

And yes I remember the bunk bed springs too! The only time I ever slept in a bunk was on a family self-catering holiday when I was about 10. The first week I had the top bunk, the second week my younger sister had it. I can still picture gazing up at those springs.

Oh my gosh!!!! I had completely forgotton about those! Sis & I shared a room, so we had bunk beds. They had a red metal frame and springs that caught in your hair  We would have had the bunkbeds up untill I was about 10 yrs old - about 23 years ago. So we would have had the bunks in the mid to late 80s.

LOL Sis & I used to see how far we could push the top 'bunkee' upwards, but never thought of pinging each other out. I'm glad we didn't grow up with a brother!

Did your top bunk have a frighteningly large hanging down bit, where the springs had stretched so the middle sagged? Ours did, that why we caught our hair so often, you only had to sit on the bottom bunk wrongly and the sagging top section would have you by the hair!

Wow, I have not thought of those bunks in many years :)

ETA and hours of fun spent making & camping out in a 'den', by hanging all the bedding from the top bunk to drape down :-)

**~ Aromat ~**

Yippee.  That's it !  Oh my goodness - my Aunt Shirley's favourite table condiment Ooh fancy

(((((( It's now 1972, and I'm sitting on her vinyl covered dining chairs, in her 'shoes-off-at-the-door' house, looking at her Poole Pottery dolphins which are proudly displayed under the print of her Tretchikoff blue woman ))))))

Aromat is going on my next shopping list and in the post to my sister.  Thank you.  What truly odd stuff it is...

Seasonall was another favourite seasoning of the time and that is still available today.

My brother would get the corners of the top sheet  thread them through the springs and then pull...HARD.. pinning me to the mattress, and then my feet got tickled or similar ;-)

I remember bunk beds for the wrong reason. I'm one of 4 kids & every year we got taken to Woolacombe for our hols and my 2 brothers shared the bottom bunk while I shared the top with my sister. I think most nights were spent squabbling for room & being kicked from below by my brothers. Apart from that it was a lovely place!

I don't remember the bunk beds, but it did remind me of riding in a 2CV in France nearly 40 years ago :) :) The seats were just canvas (or similar) over what seemed to be elastic bands and every time we went over a bump (which was most of the time on French roads) my head hit the roof :) :) :)

oh yes...at the time I had two younger brothers (a third eventually joined us, but mercifully too late to enjoy this ) and the bunkbed was a key component of our evening circus act--ringmaster (self) commanding two siblings to jump from chair to dresser to top bunk, hang upside down and flip over...a sort of early bedroom parkour, really. The routines grew in complexity as the boys mastered the techniques; the furniture was moved further apart, with inevitable 'accidents' hushed up so that my parents would never suspect that we were doing anything other than homework (another relic of antique times).

Happy days!
