Topic Other Boards / Foo / Is it right to query posts about *something* that seems odd?
- By Tarimoor [gb] Date 03.06.10 21:46 UTC
Just asking, because I've done this a couple of times on here, hopefully not in a critical way, but because during the course of my time owning dogs, being on the internet on various forums, I've come across lots of deceptions and would hope, by querying *something* someone brings up in a thread, that it might either help them avoid the same sort of deception, or clarify they haven't fallen foul of something similar.

Do you think in general, it's acceptable to ask questions that are related to topics to try and raise awareness of issues that might not have been raised initially by the OP?  I alway try to do this, if I spot something, in a way that's non-judgemental, although I am often in a hurry, so can see that my responses may be rather matter of fact.  And I hope at the very least, that if it is something that hasn't affected the op, then it's something others who may be browsing the internet can read and learn from.

Do you think it's worthwhille expanding on issues, or is it just unwanted input bordering on OT?

Personally I think if the persons wants to, then go ahead- thats what a forum is for. :-)

We generally 'expand' threads here, it's a good way of adding points and knowledge that may be missed, sometimes if a thread goes off too much our mods will swing it back to the original OP's question but we all often learn more facts from the odd drift off.

If you feel something is deceptive, then yes, please but in on any forum, people may or may not listen but you should always point out your feelings towards something as long as you are not falsely accusing anyone and make it clear it is your opinion only, but asking questions is the only way any of us learn anything. :-)

I know that sometimes when I read a post, I get a sense of deja-vu - all over again ;) - or sometimes one gets snippets of information, but you just know that you are not getting the whole picture.

I then come straight to the point and ask the questions that pop up in my mind from the original post - its only then that one can give a straight answer ...or maybe show the op in the light that was not obvious from the first post.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to query something if your experience has been different, or you have doubts about advice that has been given. The only thing is, if the query starts going off the original topic the moderators don't like it as it can mean several things are being discussed and it gets a bit mixed up, so if something is likely to turn into a long debate and is not directly related to the original question, maybe put that you have doubts and are going to start a new topic on that subject. :-)
