Stop a puppy owner from adding their own kennel name to the dogs name?
- By munrogirl76 Date 21.05.10 23:42 UTC
I don't know for definite, but I don't think so - no KC rules on it that I know of.

I think if the puppy goes on breeding terms in joint names and its stated that the puppy remains soley in the breeders' affix, then it could be done I suppose. But otherwise no, I don't think so. And why would they want to unless they didn't like the puppy owner in which case they shouldn't have let them have a puppy in the first place.

No!

Ahh ok, its just its stated that "nobody is allowed to place their own kennel name at the end of any of my dogs names" on a breeders website. I didnt think it was possible- unless there is a separate contract??

I'm really surprised.  If you just told them that you were happy with their request, and later had your affix added, I would have thought that they could do nothing about it.

Once you have bought a puppy, you own it.  And the breeder has no control over your decision to add something to the name.  Yes, they can put breeding restrictions on.  But naming restrictions???  I don't think so!

There used to be 4 endorsements a breeder or owner could use, the two we have now (which iare 'not eligible for export pedigree', and 'progeny not eligible for registration') and also 'name unchangeable' and not eligible for exhibition'.

I expect the KC viewed the latter two as unfairly restirctive, and of no real beneift.

I agree, they can not stop it. The only thing they can do is not sell to the show or working world, just sell their pups as pets if it erks them so much.

I really can't understand their reasoning as breeders with affixes yes, the pup has our affix at the forefront it shows where the pup has come from, who bred it and if it does well our names are always there, but the new owner, owns it, raised it, trained it, looked after it, shows or works it, why do they have a problem with them adding their affix to the rear of the name to show off their hard work too? It's very selfish isn't it?

The only problem I can see is if the pup goes on to become good breeding stock does really well in the show or working world and they have a fit about lifting endorsements once they see the new owners affix at the rear of the name, that might be a problem, but perhaps the KC and solicitors would have to become involved so that is worth thinking about.

I'd like to know their reasoning..........

At the moment, in cats, you cannot add your prefix to the name of a cat you bring in, but it has been discussed for the pats year. You would not believe the number of breeders who say if this is brought in they will stop registering their kittens or make people sign something saying they promise to not add their prefix!  WEIRD. After all, all it does is show who OWNS the animal, so what is wrong in that?

Just think these breeders are so sad and must be very unsporting!  There kennel name is still at the front, if the owners did win with it you would think that they would be proud that their kennel name is there.

Absolutely! I asked George's breeder if she minded me adding my affix on when I first got it (Henry already had his stud book no so couldn't do it with him) and she was surprised that I thought it necessary to ask - she said he was my dog and I could do what I liked with his name!

I do know that alot of this breeders website hasnt been changed in quite a few years so maybe she used to have the 'name unchangeable' endorsement and just hasnt updated her website :S

She is probably the most known and successful breeder within her breed.

The 'name unchangeable' endorsement was ditched over 15 years ago, so I'd have thought she'd have noticed!
