my girl was sick this morning shes been off her food for 2days ,shes now scratching like mad in her whelping box ,she does it for a couple of mins stops and then starts again ,she then gets out sniffs about jumps back in and starts all over again ,the thing is she wants to be up on the sofa and keeps going mad to get to it ,(hubby is sleeping on there) im sat on other but she dont want this 1? do you think she could hold off having pups if i dont let her have them on there ? her due date is tues by 1st mating and thur by 2nd
- By myboo [gb] Date 30.04.10 22:31 UTC
sorry not much help again but your girl sounds like mine, shes been scratching alot at the sofa to the point she got her nail stuck in the pilliow (about half n hour ago), she went in her bed which is quite unsual as shes usually with us about this time of night, shes back with us now but she scatch for a bout a minute then stop and lie down she never really does this
i think you might be getting closer white lilly xx

My last 2 girls wanted to whelp on the sofa.  More comfortable for me than the one that wanted to do it underneath the radiator!

I just covered the thing deeply with bath towels.  As she is viable for a satisfactory whelping, just let her go into labour where she chooses.  Once she has had them she will watch you move pups to the whelping box, and happily move!

Good Luck.  :-)

Could be tonight then.  Have only ever had 1 bitch whelp during the day, which she did twice.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 01.05.10 08:04 UTC
same here ,1 of my girls had 2 litters and both in the day...my other girl had a litter she started at 9.30am and was done for lunch ,that was great :)
- By Abbeypap [gb] Date 01.05.10 08:23 UTC
Hope all goes well with your girls.

My girl had her pups late Thursday early hours Friday.  She doesn't do digging, panting or any thing that gives any sign other than she went to her bed in the day and stayed there.  She squeezed her eyes shut for a few seconds and gave a little push and there was pup 1 with pup 2 on it's tail.  She then had a sleep for 2 hours and then the same again for pup 3 and 4.  No mess no fuss and I was back in bed and sleeping for 3am.

Bliss :-)
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 01.05.10 08:35 UTC
Certainly much easier during the day.   But the majority of mine wait until night, usually having the first about midnight then finishing early morning.

Had one bitch with her first litter gave no signs at all, eating as normal, no panting, no wanting to go in then out, just walked across the kitchen and promptly dropped the first pup on the floor, by the time I had got there the second had been born, I was behind with each pup being born.  Had a litter of 10  all survived.

thats lovely :) ive got a feeling my girl will be like this but it will be on the sofa not her whelping box :-0 shes here now next to me and will not move off for nothing shes even eat her food there ,hubby had to hold her dish for her :)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 01.05.10 08:52 UTC

- By white lilly [gb] Date 01.05.10 09:15 UTC

- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 01.05.10 09:28 UTC
Plenty of coffee needed then - for you, not your girl :)  You can spend the time thinking of Reg names for the soon to be new arrivals.
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 01.05.10 09:38 UTC
One of mine wanted to whelp underneath my daughters bed  We had to keep her away, obviously, so she had them on the landing at the top of the stairs next to the bedroom door ;-) Not as bad as it sounds, actually. The landing led to the bedroom and the floored attic (which we didn't go into very often) so she was actually quite quiet up there.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 01.05.10 10:31 UTC

This is the time I feel really sorry for them, and wish I could do more.

But all we can do is have patience, and be there for them.
