I taught my Large Munsterlander male to come up on command. He is now 7 1/2 years old and dances around me before being the 'up' command.

When he is calm (easier said than done, I know ;-) ) you make him sit in front of you. Pat your chest, open your arms wide and say 'up', or whatever word you wish to use. Praise him enthusiastically, then tell him 'down' or 'off' or whatever word you wish to use. You may need to push him down. Once he is down bend over and clap and praise him again.  You will have to keep doing this until he gets the message, but don't do it too often at the beginning. He has to learn what you want him to do. Being a Pointer he should learn quickly.

As to the toys problem, the easy answer, I'm afraid, is not to let the toys go anywhere near your feet :-p

when your dog goes to jump up turn away from him and ignore him until he calms down. Any attention he gets from jumping on you is a reward from you. once he gets the message you can say the command 'down' and then turn away, when he calms reward him with a reat or ask him to sit then reward him.
only calm behaviour gets attention/ rewards and once your dog realises this he will stop doing something that gets him no reward from you.   make sure you tellall your visitors the same thing and this will re-enforce the training for you .

Completely agree with bear.  We used this technique on our Golden Retriever puppy (who is now just over 2 years old) and it really does work.  At first it doesn't seem as if you are going anywhere but suddenly you realise that he doesn't jump up.  It really has to be enforced by all though.  Some people who aren't really used to dogs flap their hands around and our dog (who tends to be hands fixated) would (when small) jump up to lick the person's hands.  Ask people to tuck them under their armpits when turning round and doing the "ignore" bit so there is nothing to distract the dog.  Our Golden will now meet all people, new and known, by sitting down and wagging his tail like mad and will not jump up unless someone starts flapping their hands or enticing him to jump (think some people need training too!).

As above posters but with my GSP this worked better for me, as he jumped up I caught his paws and just gently pushed him away slightly, while stepping back myself causing paws to miss me and land back on the floor.Only had to do it a few  times and it became a pointless, (sorry pun intended). exercise for him and he stopped.

Pointer Cross what with??
